From Jack Bowman, Minister of Music
Sunday, August 5, we will celebrate communion. We welcome our Summer Choir with a favorite anthem by J.S. Bach. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring is the most common English title of a piece of music derived from the last movement of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147 (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life) composed by Bach in 1716 and 1723. The anthem if often performed slowly and reverently at wedding ceremonies as well as during Christian festive seasons like Christmas and Easter despite the affect suggested by Bach in his original scoring “for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuo.” Bach undoubtedly performed the piece in a faster, more joyful style.

Searching for a Spiritual Practice

The new slate of deacons started off this year with a retreat at Silver Lake in late June. It was a time to listen and hear each other and to dream about what this new year could hold for the group as a whole. At the end, Pastor Diane suggested that we try to adopt a new spiritual practice that we could do daily throughout the next year.. .
