Perspective is a funny thing. As a school leader, as any leader does, trying to see your organization from multiple angles is a great challenge. No matter how easy it may be for us to temper our experience with helping gain perspective, it becomes infinitely more challenging to understand the perspective of young people. School leaders either fail to recall the conscious experience of being a high school student, in which they fail to relate, empathize, or generalize their own experience to that of a student's; or they key in on commonalities from their own experience that can resonate with students today.

In my haste to run an orderly school with universally high expectations, I often fail to recall the reasons why I visited the school nurse when I wasn't sick, asked to use the bathroom when I had no intention of using the bathroom at all, why I deflected with disruptive comments in class when I just didn't understand material and didn't want anyone to know, or made disrespectful and obnoxious comments to student-athletes from opposing schools. Yet, I see students engage in these behaviors and automatically think they are doing something wrong.

Because I'm constantly refining my perspective, I proudly declare I'm a "work in progress" and happy to admit it. And maybe, that's not such a bad thing for our kids to see in their principal.

Enjoy the rest of your week and if you have a student at Acceleration East, please remember that we have distributed 1st quarter student progress reports and after-school tutoring kicks off today!
