Corporate tax cuts included in this bill were made permanent, while tax cuts for individuals last just under 10 years. Taxpayers in the top 1%-people making over $730,000-would ultimately receive nearly 50% of the total tax benefit. In a place like Hawai'i, where families already struggle just to get by due to our high cost of living, those earning less than $55,000 per year will see little to no tax break from this bill, and would actually see their taxes increase in 10 years when the individual tax cuts expire.

Congressional tax reform bills. The House passed a bill that would reduce the value of the mortgage interest deduction, eliminate the deduction for state and local taxes, and cap the property tax deduction - increasing taxes for many homeowners. Next: A possible Senate vote.

County explores homeless solutions
The County may establish a safe zone to help the homeless population. Garden Island
"While the county has not implemented a safe zone here on Kauai, it is an option that we are considering," Sarah Blane, Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.'s chief of staff, wrote in an email. "However, we would need to ensure that we site a location that has access to water, electricity and is in close proximity to services. Proper management and security of the site would also be key factors that we would need to work out prior to us proposing a safe zone or similar operation."
