University of New Mexico MPH student reflects on her experience at the Albuquerque Area Southwest Tribal Epidemiology Center
|
The Public Health Training Center (PHTC) traineeship opportunity at the
Albuquerque Area Southwest Tribal Epidemiology Center (AASTEC)
has provided me with a new skillset and an overall valuable experience working in the Public Health realm. As a current MPH student, I was able to expand upon my coursework in Biostatistics and Epidemiology - from analyzing data to creating
factsheets
. I was able to apply my knowledge to projects I was passionate about. Specifically, I was able to work towards finding solutions to help resolve the opioid epidemic in Indian Country and help provide useful information on medication assisted treatment (MAT) to American Indian/Alaska Native peoples. Having an experience like this has allowed me to form strong connections with public health professionals and with members of the tribal communities AASTEC serves. Most importantly, this internship has renewed my sense of purpose and dedication to serving
American Indian/Alaska Native populations.
- Lenora Waconda, University of New Mexico, MPH student
