WELLS, Carolyn (1862-1942)
 

Carolyn Wells was a prolific American poet, mystery novelist, and children's author, who married Hadwin Houghton, the heir of the Houghton-Mifflin publishing empire. Wells often traveled to England and cultivated a wide circle of literary friends on both sides of the Atlantic. She wrote approximately 170 books. Several of her books have been turned into films, "Dearie" (1927), "The Woman Next Door" (1919), "The Mark Of Cain" (1917), "The Countless Charming" (1917), and "He Got There After All" (1917).

Winston H. Pote was one of America's earliest ski photographers. His career in the 1920s paralleled the rise of alpine skiing in America. For example, he took photos of Charley Proctor, the only native-born American, on the 1928 US Olympic team. He began working as a druggist in Swampscott, Mass., was as an amateur guide and photographer, and then became a winter mountaineer and lecturer specializing in aerial photography of the New Hampshire mountains during winter... A circular was issued to the Heads of Municipalities in Upper Canada in January 1857 requesting the number of Farm Labourers (and Domestic Servants, Men and Women, Boys and Girls, and Mechanics) needed in each Municipality for the next season.
