CNS 2020 Trainee Panel Explores Adaption for an Unpredictable Future

Although members of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society (CNS) experienced  this year's annual meeting  in the safety and comfort of their homes rather than together in Boston, that did not prevent them from connecting from around the world to share their scientific work and insights. In fact, one common theme emerged throughout the conference and the  CNS Trainee Association Professional Development Panel  that was applicable for anyone developing their careers, especially during the current times: perseverance. TMS Provides a Window into Language Network Reorganization After a Stroke

As a doctoral student in the Boston University Aphasia Research Laboratory studying rehabilitation-induced neuroplasticity in young adults with language and cognitive deficits after brain injury, I am interested in learning how TMS can be used to understand these processes and potentially promote their recovery. Thus, I was naturally drawn to the work shared by one research group using TMS to investigate language networks in healthy and lesioned brains at the  CNS 2020 virtual meeting  this month. Exploring Novel Paths for Brain Stimulation

Being able to directly target specific areas of the brain is important both for cognitive neuroscientists seeking to establish direct causal links between neural signal and cognitive processes and for clinicians treating neurological disorders. The gold standard for approaching such tasks has been to directly manipulate the brain during surgical interventions via electrical stimulation. However, these techniques are invasive and, thus, can be used only in specific medical cases in humans. At the Cognitive Neuroscience Society (CNS) 2020 virtual meeting, researchers discussed novel approaches to non-invasive brain stimulation, introducing new work on promising techniques, such as ultrasound and non-invasive deep brain stimulation.
