Message from Our Partners
Welcome, Friend, to this month's newsletter where we talk about business succession planning, estate planning, and other topics that affect our community.

Businesses are starting to open up again in Florida and, for some people, we are getting back to business, even if it's not "as usual". Of course, with everything that is going on, we are getting more questions about wills and trusts, and about retirement and passing family businesses down. We talk about these topics here and on our blog.

For business owners, we cannot stress enough how wonderful our local Chambers of Commerce have been. We are proud to be members of several, and serve as a board member and ambassador. They do great work and are helping businesses reach customers with new and creative strategies.

Follow us on  FACEBOOK  to be kept in the loop about our activities and the latest legal developments. We also go live from time-to-time, giving updates to legal issues and answering questions. If you miss any of our webinars, we post them all on our YOUTUBE page as well. If you would like our page or subscribe to our channel while you're there, that would be much appreciated!

We are here to help you and your family. Please do not hesitate to call us if you have any questions. In the meantime, stay safe, and wash your hands.

With Warm Regards,

Matthew H. Rosenthal, Esq. & Justin A. Meyer, Esq.

A Succession Planning Primer
Part of owning a business is planning your exit strategy. That does not mean that you have to plan to sell out in five years, but it does mean planning how and when you will retire. We talk about business succession planning and what it means for you on the blog.

"It is important to recognize that succession planning is more than just making a quick decision to get out of the business. You need to make sure that you have a strong team of advisers helping you – handling any tax, legal, or investment questions and ensuring that you are making decisions with as much information as possible."
Are you a Florida LLC or Corporation?
Florida's Annual Report deadline has been postponed to June 30th. If you are an LLC or corporation doing business in the State of Florida, you now have until June 30th before you need to file your annual report.

Reports filed on or after on July 1 will incur a late fee.

" Covid-19 and the self-isolation it has imposed has seemed to trigger a rise in the sharing of misinformation as to both the causes and the treatment of one of the world’s deadliest pandemics. As a result of all the memes and rumors populating social media, even the news, and the devastation the virus is causing to families, not to mention the economy, it is more important than ever to separate fact from fiction. "
Separating Fact from Fiction about Covid-19
You can't escape the stories about the coronavirus, but understanding the truth about it is hard - a lot of people's opinions are based on hope, fear, and news snippets. Debo Ofsowitz from 26Health joined us on the blog to break down the science of the virus and how we can stay safe, no matter what we are doing in the coming weeks.

YOUR MONTHLY LEGAL TIPS
TIP #1 - New I-9 Form
Perhaps lost in the shuffle of everything that's been going on, the USCIS released a new version of the I-9 employment eligibility verification form. The new version is required starting May 1, 2020. We have made copies available on our website .
TIP #2 - Record-Keeping Best Practices
There are a lot of open questions regarding PPP loan forgiveness and tax deductability. The rules are changing almost weekly, so right now, the best thing to do is keep records of everything. On a separate spreadsheet, break out how you are using any PPP or other coronavirus relief funds, including on what date it is spent.
TIP #3 - Documenting Leave Requests
If an employee makes a leave request for a coronavirus-related reason, there are payroll tax credits available to reimburse you for the salary that they are paid. However, you must document the leave request, and, if you deny extended leave, you must document your reasons why as well. If we can help you with an employee request form, please reach out and let us know.
Estate Planning for LGBTQ+ Individuals
Even though marriage equality is the law of the land, LGBTQ+ individuals can still have distinct needs in estate planning. From surrogacy and adoption concerns to ensuring that your partner will be given all of the access that you want them to, it is important that members of the community have a strong estate plan in place. Pride Chamber board member Matt Rosenthal discussed some of the unique challenges that you face on our blog.

"there is still a large percentage of LGBTQ+ couples who are not married, and therefore, are not afforded the same protections. According to a  2017 Gallup Poll , only 10.2% of LGBTQ+ Americans are married to a same-sex spouse. Those numbers are surely greater today, however, it leaves a staggering amount of people unprotected when it comes to estate planning."
