Rector's Ramblings

Rector's Ramblings

We thoroughly enjoyed getting away for a week last week.  As we do most years, we spent time in Saluda, NC, enjoying the mountains, which turns out to be a pandemic-friendly setting.  We don't typically eat out much when we're there, so we didn't miss that (we did eat outdoors at one of our favorite breweries, where the closest table was twenty-five feet away!).  And despite being busy season for tourists, we really didn't encounter many people on the trails we used.  Lest you think we're like so many of the tourists who seem to be visiting St. Simons, we took our masks everywhere and followed distancing guidelines.  There too, it seems to be rare, at least based on the people that thanked us for doing it.  Apparently, people think taking a vacation means taking a vacation from the pandemic.  It doesn't work that way, but I digress.

This was the first year we were able to mountain bike as a family.  Our girls both learned to ride since we moved to Georgia, but mountain biking doesn't really offer much around here.  In fact, these were the first "real hills" our kids have had to manage since they lost their training wheels.  I grew up on hills, literally.  My entire elementary school era involved riding uphill from our home that was situated in a small valley between two steep hills.  If you didn't/couldn't ride hills, you didn't go anywhere.

Backpack Buddies - Menu Planning

A frequent question is how we know what to include in a weekend food bag for our Backpack Buddy friends. That has been more of a challenge lately because of the interruptions in the food supply. But we have some basics we try to follow while still having fun with the menu:

* Two breakfast items (oatmeal pack plus a cereal bar)
* Two servings of protein, such as chicken soup, or a jar of   peanut butter
* A fruit cup
* A vegetable (when available)
* Shelf stable juice box or milk carton (the latter has been virtually impossible to find since March)
* Granola bar
* Crackers
* Cookies
* Fruity snacks
Every now and then, we score big with Second Harvest and are able to include a fresh apple or orange, and string cheese, though it is getting too hot for that now. We have fun "pairing" the items on the menu. For example, this past week, we had several  entrĂ©e  combinations.
* Chunk tuna and Ritz crackers "stack"
* Chicken noodle soup, and captain's wafers with       cheese dip
* Jar of peanut butter and "stack" of Ritz crackers
* The ever popular Vienna sausages & Beanie          Weenies

Since school ended, we've tried to include special treats for the kids. We've provided Cracker Jacks, Tootsie Pops, Pixy Sticks, and popsicles. They will receive tootsie rolls in patriotic flag wrappers next week, along with a stars and stripes pinwheel for the upcoming 4th of July Holiday weekend. (We decided against including fireworks!)
We appreciate the response from Parishioners and friends to our weekly calls for specific items. The kids and their families appreciate these bags so much!

And We Appreciate YOU making this program possible!
This week, we're in need of paper bags (always!) and the items listed below.

*   PAPER GROCERY BAGS
   (With or without handles!)
* Beanee Weenees
* Vienna Sausages
* Individual Size Pork & Beans
* Canned Corn
* Plastic Grocery Bags

We are always grateful for your donations! Any and all items may be dropped off on the front porch at the Christ Church Parish House.

If you would like to help the Backpack Buddies ministry with a monetary donation, it would be greatly appreciated. You can donate by check (just mail it to Christ Church, at 6329 Frederica Road St. Simons Island, GA 31522 - check memo, Backpack Buddies) or give online  here  (choose Backpack Program).

For more information about the Backpack Buddies program, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected].
