Dr. Nahum Melamed

Dr. Nahum Melamed is a project leader at The Aerospace Corporation since 2003. He received BS and MS in Aerospace Engineering from the Technion, Israel, and PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech. His expertise include Orbital Mechanics and Optimal Guidance. His key activities include Planetary Defense from Near Earth Objects, Space Debris Mitigation and Flight SW Validation.
He leads a collaboration with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) developing a physics based web NEO Deflection App, or NDA, to design NEO deflection missions and gain insights on the challenges involved. This includes descriptions and tutorials that are necessary to interpret the data, supports planetary defense conferences, workshops and exercises, and is available online https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/nda/. Dr. Melamed serves on planetary defense conferences and planetary defense exercises organizing committees, gives talks at these venues, and instructs a planetary defense class at Aerospace.
Dr. Mark Boslough
Mark Boslough received his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Caltech and joined Sandia National Laboratories in 1983. His impact research is focused on computational modeling of airbursts, their physical effects, and their contribution to the NEO risk. He participated in documentary field expeditions to airburst sites including the Libyan Desert of Egypt in 2006, Tunguska in 2008, and Chelyabinsk in 2013. He served on the asteroid mitigation panel for the National Research Council, and coauthored the report “Defending Planet Earth” that was delivered to Congress in 2010.
Madhu Thangavelu

Department of Astronautical Engineering, Viterbi School of Engineering & School of Architecture, University of Southern California, National Space Society Board of Directors.

Madhu Thangavelu conducts the ASTE527 graduate Space Exploration Architectures Concept Synthesis Studio in the Department of Astronautical Engineering within the Viterbi School of Engineering, and he is also a graduate thesis adviser in the School of Architecture at USC. He holds degrees in both engineering and architecture and has contributed extensively to concepts in space architecture, especially dealing with extraterrestrial development. He is the author or co-author of over 70 technical papers in space architecture, lunar base design and human factors, and co-author of the book The Moon: Resources, Future Development and Settlement (1999) published by John Wiley and Sons and the second edition by Springer/Praxis in 2007. He is the invited author of the chapter “Living on the Moon” in the Encyclopedia of Aerospace Engineering, a major reference work published by John Wiley and Sons in 2010 and the online second edition updated in 2012. He is a member of the USC team that won the NASA NIAC Phase I award in 2011 and Phase II award in 2012. As a former AIAA officer, he served as Vice Chair for Education in the Los Angeles section. He is on the faculty of the International Space University, an international organization that provides training for a promising new generation of leaders and space professionals around the world. He is on the board of directors of the National Space Society.
He is a strong advocate for articulating the philosophy of space: Scientists and Engineers(in particular) have a tendency to get lost in the tools and toys they make, though some of us do arrive at philosophy for the meaning of what we do and why, via the long route of experience. By then, alas, for the most part, our life’s work is done. It is a good idea to set us all on a solid foundation in space philosophy, so we can all have a steady handle on our works, as nature reveals her secrets… slowly, ever so slowly, but surely…
Evolving Directed Energy System Concepts For Planetary Defense in the Earth-Moon System Domain
As our sensitivities, capabilities and capacity to defend Earth from certain classes of impactors that pose imminent threat improve, it is possible to create concepts and build networks to defend our biosphere at short notice. This talk will present some preliminary concepts to address and mitigate short warning period threats using advanced directed energy systems.
Dr. Makoto Yoshikawa
Makoto Yoshikawa is an associate professor of Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). He is the mission manager of Hayabusa2 project. He got the Ph.D. degree in astronomy at the University of Tokyo in 1989. After working as a researcher of JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science), he worked at former Communication Research Laboratory from 1991 as senior researcher. He moved to ISAS as associate professor in 1998. His research field is celestial mechanics, and he was involved many space missions such as GEOTAIL, HALCA, Nozomi, Hayabusa, Akatsuki, IKAROS, and Hayabusa2. He is now also working for planetary defense issues.
