I’ve been thinking about mission studies lately. For some, even mentioning those words will cause them to start twitching or perhaps break out in a cold sweat. Others might begin to curse and vow never to do that again. I certainly hope that’s not the case. I think mission studies can be helpful, maybe like a visit to the doctor or dentist is helpful. We may not want to hear what they have to say, but they have our best interests in mind, and if we follow their advice, we will be healthier in the long run. I think doing a mission study regularly – say every five years – will also make us healthier in the long run.

3 p.m. Sept. 22 at the church
A dedication ceremony will be held on Sept. 22 for Glenville's solar energy system. Rev. Karen Kinney will lead the short outdoor ceremony, which will be followed by solar-powered refreshments and information about solar energy in the church hall. The refreshments – sun tea and s’mores – are being made by the Gilmer County Girl Scouts, using energy from the sun.

Beginning in January, Davis & Elkins College will offer a preaching course on Tuesday evenings as part of a new minor designed as pre-professional training for those seeking to enter ministry after college. The 5th annual Day of Hope: A Celebration of Prevention and Recovery will take place this weekend. Sponsored by the West Virginia Council of Churches, the Community Impact Coalition and prevention organizations across the state, this day is an opportunity for faith and local communities to focus on solution-oriented discussion and activities to reduce substance use disorder in our state. This year's focus is on the effects substance and alcohol use in teens have on their brains.

Social media addiction and internet addiction disorder are not currently classed in the DSM-5 but are considered conditions for further study. This Kanawha Pastoral Counseling Center workshop will discuss the validity of internet addiction as a diagnosis, problems that can occur from excessive device use and risk factors for adolescent social media addiction in addition to the use and validity of adapted screening tools. Cost $40.

Condolences
William Alan Light, 71, of Bluefield, passed away August 15th at Princeton Community Hospital following a long battle with a chronic and debilitating disease. Alan was member of First Presbyterian Church of Bluefield, where he served as an elder, trustee, and treasurer. He also served as a member of the Presbytery's current Stewardship Committee. Services were held August 21 at First Presbyterian Church of Bluefield. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church’s Janie and Herbert Light Congregational Care Fund or to the church’s Capital 225 Fund; mail to First Presbyterian Church, 208 Tazewell Ave., Bluefield, WV 24701.

Actress Anita Gutschick, who last visited the Presbytery at the Presbyterian Women Spring Gathering in March, will perform as Sarah, Martha and the Sinful Woman in her one-woman drama "Too Old, Too Busy, Too Sinful." Bob & Kristi Rice visit rescheduled
Due to an accident Bob Rice suffered, he and Kristi will not be coming to West Virginia at the end of this month as previously announced. We are hoping to reschedule their visits and will have more information at a later date.
