Mission Statement
Christ Episcopal Church is a diverse, inclusive  community  that encounters God and serves others in the City of Poughkeepsie, the nation, and the world

We believe that social justice requires work, people deserve to be celebrated,
and faith is a journey

We are inspired to grow through the sacraments, scripture, the beauty and power of worship and the rich traditions of our Church.

Rector 's Message

Dear Friends,

Last week, John Kater sent me a picture of a painting that hung in his office when he was rector. It was a painting of the corner of Montgomery and Academy Street. He thinks that this painting should always belong to the rector of Christ Church. I agree. It is a reminder of the English notion that a parish represented an area of land, a community. Our community is the Southside of the City of Poughkeepsie- Clinton Elementary School is our neighborhood school and Vassar Brothers is our neighborhood hospital. Christ Church is a big part of this neighborhood and we have been in this spot since the 1880s.

Rector's Message Continued
Rectorcontinued
Earlier this week I was given the news that we received a $5,000 grant from All Our Children. You may remember that the All Our Children grants were created about ten years ago to encourage and foster relationships between Episcopal churches and local public schools. Christ Church received one of the early grants and it did, indeed, encourage the partnerships between Clinton Elementary School and Christ Church.

Of course, we have continued this relationship over the years. It was in recognition for this rich relationship with the Clinton School, so evident in all the ways that we support young people in our neighborhood, that we were awarded this grant. The wardens and I have discussed options for how to use this gift - repairs to our playground, replacement of equipment, initiatives at the Clinton School, new programs at the church all come to mind - but be assured that after weighing our options, we will invest our grant back into this partnership with the Clinton School.

One of my favorite sayings is from Confucius: "If your plan is for one year plant rice. If your plan is for ten years plant trees. If your plan is for one hundred years educate children. " At Christ Church, we have the gift of having been in Poughkeepsie for over 250 years. We expect to be in Poughkeepsie for the next 250 years. That means that our church expects to receive the gifts of the fruitful relationship with our local elementary school. We want to create the safest, cleanest neighborhood in the City of Poughkeepsie. We want Clinton Elementary School to be the finest public school in our city because our future mayor, church wardens, and public school teachers are all in school there now. We will need leaders who are wise and compassionate and that begins with their experience in elementary school.

I am proud that Christ Church was entrusted with a grant from "All Our Children". It is a confirmation of the work that we have done and an expression of confidence in our future work with the children of the City of Poughkeepsie. This is our neighborhood --and we are committed to being a good neighbor and partner in this place.

In Faith,

Susan+
