Hello Friends,
When September arrives, there is a new energy in the air.  School's back in session.  Vacations are over.  The weather starts to cool off.  We look forward to our favorite football games. Outdoor activities are pleasant once again.  AND, we can pay some much needed attention to our yards.  If you don't know where to start, come see us.  We'll help you figure it out.

snake tongs
Afraid of Snakes? No Problem!
We have specially crafted snake tongs that allow people to safely handle/remove snakes from their yard should they run into an unwanted snake running around their house.
bird feeder cleaning
It's time to clean your bird feeders.
Keep your birds healthy!  We will "deep" clean one bird feeder for free with every 10 lbs of bird seed you purchase during the month of September.   Our normal charge for deep cleaning is $5.00 per feeder.  Our service includes taking the feeder apart and cleaning every part thoroughly.
Ask Zach

"I see a snake in my garden. What should I do?"
  • "Take two steps backwards and let the animal be on its way."

The most common snake seen in this area is the harmless  Eastern Rat Snake. Snake tongs provide the ability to grab & handle the snake at a safe distance which can allow the customer to relocate the animal safely.

lawn care
It's time for Step 4's Lawn Care Program
  • FOR ST. AUGUSTINE & BERMUDA APPLY: ferti-lome Winterizer & Weed Preventer II for Southern Grasses w/Dimension 10-0-1
  • FOR CENTIPEDE & ZOYSIA APPLY: Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper containing Dimension
Typically the heat will not break until late September in the Midlands. The colors in a September garden are just breathtaking.  What began to show some stress last month is starting to perk back up with the cooler nights. It's time to stand back and reap all you've sown during spring and summer.
  • Plan your October planting projects since October
is the best time of the year to plant!  Prepare the soil, kill the weeds, make new beds, fix the drainage, put in hardscape.  Be ready to plant when the weather cools!
  • Put pre-emergent on your lawn to prevent winter weeds.  (See DIY lawn care program Step 4 above)
  • Apply grub control to your lawn, if you
haven't alreadydone it.  This will help to reduce the population of Japanese Beetles that invade your plants next June.  Grubs turn into Japanese Beetles.
  • Plant cool-weather vegetables if you haven't already.  Do it early.  You're running out of time!
  • Do NOT fertilize or prune shrubs.  You may "clean up" a plant, cutting out dead branches, etc.  But don't do a heavy pruning.
  • You can divide perennials now or wait until October.
  • Clean up (cut back) leggy annuals and perennials
in order to get another flush of color when the temperatures cool.
  • Check all your plants for insects infestations or diseases that may have developed over the summer and treat accordingly.

September Just In
Just In
  • If you want to see Monarch Butterflies in your yard, then plant milkweed.  If you want to help save the Monarchs, then plant milkweed.  Milkweed, aka Butterflyweed, is the host plant for Monarchs, where they lay their eggs, and their caterpillars feed before making their chrysalises.  We just received a new shipment of the Tuberosa variety, which is replete with seed pods.  So, one plant can become a meadow of milkweed before you know it!
  • Olive Martini Elaeagnus - A beautiful new variety of elaeagnus, the "olive martini,"  has a yellow edge on its silvery green leaves.  This is a large fast-growing shrub that you would use as a hedge or a screen.  One plant gets 10-15 ft tall and wide and can be grown in full sun to part shade.
  • Jazz Hands Variegated Loropetalum - This new variety of loropetalum adds a unique color to your landscape all year round.  It has hot pink, purple and white foliage.  It is relatively small and compact for a loropetalum, growing 4 ft tall and wide.  And like most loropetalums, it sports hot pink fringe flowers in early spring and can be planted in full sun to part shade.
  • American Beauty Berry - Birds love the bright purple berries on this plant.  It's native, non-invasive and makes a stunning statement in the Fall garden.
September Blooming
What's Blooming
  • Pansies, Violas, Snapdragons, Mums
  • Fall Container Gardens - Select one that we have already planted in a nice glazed pot.  Or, we'll help you make your own.  It's easy.  All you need is a thriller (something tall), filler ( just like it sounds), and spiller (something trailing).  You can even incorporate edible vegetable plants into the mix.  Lettuce works great!
  • SPECIAL - Large mums in 12" decorative pots, buy 1 at $29.95, get a second one-half price.
It's Time to Go Native

Native Plants

As backyard gardeners, it is our responsibility to preserve our natural plants for future generations.  You can help to restore the availability of native plants  by adding a few to your landscape.   Not only do native plants produce beautiful flowers, but they also produce fruits, seeds, and nectar that are friendly to wildlife.
