New ULC Leadership Brief: Libraries Leading AI and Digital Citizenship

While AI promises to enhance our communities in remarkable ways, it also poses significant threats to the prosperity, privacy and security of individuals who do not understand or cannot access these new technologies. A new ULC Leadership Brief published this week provides targeted strategies for North America's public libraries to ensure an equitable and inclusive future in the Age of AI.

"The impact of AI reaches far beyond technology - it is causing a foundational shift in how people learn, work, connect and grow," said ULC President and CEO Susan Benton. "This new Leadership Brief provides a vital resource for libraries to confidently face these changes and to lead their communities in shaping an equitable and democratic future for AI."

Remembering the 1939 Alexandria Library Sit-in

On August 20, 1937, Alexandra Library (Va.) opened its Kate Waller Barrett Branch. However, due to laws in place during that time, African American citizens were not allowed to use the facility and its resources. This led to a pivotal event in the library's history on August 21, 1939, when local attorney, Samuel W. Tucker, and five other men conducted the country's first-ever library sit-in.

The library's Local History/Special Collections Branch and Kate Waller Barrett Branch opened a special exhibit in August to honor the participants of the sit-in. Additionally, the library is celebrating the 80th anniversary of this historic event with a film series celebrating black history and civil rights, running through December 2019.
