TAMWORTH VILLAGE, NH, SEPTEMBER 12, 2019 —
On Saturday, September 21, Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm in Tamworth Village marks the change of seasons with its 15th Annual Harvest Festival. Beginning at 11 a.m. and continuing until 3 p.m., this signature event celebrates New England agricultural life and harvesttime practices and traditions that have been passed down through generations.
Attendees of all ages have the opportunity to take part in harvest games and activities, interact with farm animals, explore the site and surroundings of a centuries-old farm, and engage with rural life demonstrations and exhibits.
Among this year’s featured games are corn hole, corn cob darts and a "turkey shoot.” Active visitors can take part in a farm-wide scavenger hunt, as well as skillet toss and corn husking competitions. For creatively inclined visitors, a bring-your-own scarecrow competition (preregistration required), scarecrow parade, and nature-based art creation take place.
Attendees are encouraged to try their hand at seasonal tasks such as apple cider pressing and corn grinding. This year's demonstrations showcase plant-based cloth dyeing and medicine, harvesting with a scythe, and how a variety of woodsman tools are used.
Two of the museum’s historic barns and nearly 100 acres of fields, pastures, gardens and hiking trails are open for exploration. The museum’s Hillsdale 4-H Dairy Club, named after the historic dairy farm that once inhabited the site, leads meet-and-greets of their project animals and demonstrates how they prepare for competitions. At the close of the event, visitors are invited to meet the museum’s small dairy herd and watch a machine-milking demonstration in Doc Remick’s historic Cattle Barn.
On display are historical and modern haying equipment and tractor-pulled wagon rides will be offered. A new exhibit titled “Where Home Meets Harvest:
New England Kitchen Gardens, 1790–1945” opens the same day;
three outdoor gardens complete the exhibit.
Get a taste of the season through a sample of fresh-pressed apple cider. Cider Bellies Doughnuts will be for sale, along with a Remick lunch, popcorn and beverages, while supplies last. Picnic lunches are welcome.
The museum store will feature Remick-made and gift items, farm-grown produce and a variety of farm-raised meats.
Admission includes all activities and is $10 for ages 11 and up, $5 for ages 5-10, and free for ages 4 and under. Museum members receive $2 off the admission price. This is a rain or shine event.
