This two-floor unit will help to reduce wait times by accommodating patients who come through the Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency as well as provide a dedicated neurology and stroke unit. 

Profile: Surgical Oncologist Dr. Usmaan Hameed
Dr. Usmaan Hameed is a new surgical oncologist at North York General Hospital, specializing in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.
Dr. Usmaan Hameed is a new Surgical Oncologist at North York General Hospital specializing in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.  Pursuing his interest in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) developed during residency and fellowship programs at NYGH, Dr. Hameed studied at the Research Institute against Digestive Cancer, the world leader in MIS training in Strasbourg, France. 

He is one of only a handful of North American surgeons trained in a surgical technique that reduces the risk a patient will require a permanent colostomy.

To honour his life-saving efforts, Dr. Thomas Ungar, Chief of Psychiatry and Medical Director, Mental Health Program at NYGH, received a citation from the Ontario Provincial Police in 2015.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of unintentional deaths for children.
The day began with a spur-of-the-moment decision to visit Sandbanks Provincial Park in Prince Edward County. Dr. Thomas Ungar, Chief of Psychiatry at North York General Hospital, and his wife Jodi Ungar thought a quick dip in the lake and then lunch at a local winery would make a perfect Sunday.

After 15 minutes of walking along the dunes, Dr. Ungar and his wife heard screams coming from the water. He saw splashing and a crowd of onlookers watching two rescuers attempting to pull two women from the water.
