A second Mary Persons High School Athletics Department program will temporarily suspend summer conditioning sessions for its student athletes because of Covid-19.
The school announced today the MPHS Softball Program, which was scheduled to start summer workouts next Monday, July 6, will delay sessions until Monday, July 13. The MPHS football program is scheduled to resume small group conditioning on Tuesday, July 7.
The softball delay is in place after a member of the coaching staff tested positive for Covid-19 and will be self-quarantining for two weeks. Since softball workouts had not yet started, no students have been in contact with the coach.
Last week, a football athlete also tested positive, prompting the need for him and the players in his workout group to quarantine.
Limited and restricted small group conditioning sessions were allowed under the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) guidelines released earlier this month. Due to participants testing positive, the school system is following guidance of the Department of Public Health in suspending workout sessions. Additionally, those who tested positive and those in contact with those individuals have been advised to self-quarantine for 10-14 days.
Superintendent Dr. Mike Hickman, Jr., said school officials will continue to monitor the situation and take measures as recommended by Public Health officials to protect students and staff. "Our first and primary goal is to maintain the well-being of our students and our staff, and their families," he said.
