"Of Mountains and Dragons"
September is a time of crisp days, brilliant colors, and returning energy: a season for new ventures, new semesters and getting ready for the winter that will test us. It is also perhaps a season to strengthen our spirits. What I learned from celebrating Michaelmas.

Sunday, September 29 at 10 a.m.

Worship Leader:
Rev. Patricia Hart

Worship Associate:
Kristin Kany

"Going with Empty Hands"
The Jewish traditions of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur celebrate the importance of restoring balance to life by practicing forgiveness. Is it always right to ask forgiveness from those we have harmed, or forgiving those who have harmed us? Do rituals of atonement have something to teach us?

Join Us for Worship This Sunday!
Sunday, September 15 at 10 a.m.

Worship Leader:  Rev. Patricia Hart, Developmental Senior Minister

Worship Associate:  Doug Facey

"Why Are We Here?"
Where did Unitarian Universalism come from - and where are we headed? Some say that UUism is no longer a religion, but something else entirely. Reflections on how the story of our liberal/progressive religious tradition intertwines with the nation's history, and our role at this pivotal moment.

Potluck and Coffeehouse
Todd Schlossberg

Join Us for Good Food, Friendship and Music on September 14:
Second Saturday Sanctuary City Potluck and Coffeehouse!

The students are back, you can tell - there's no parking!
Leaves tinged with red, hinting autumn is harking
Come gather 'round friends, and join in the scene
At our potluck and coffeehouse, September 14

We share a good meal, right about six
You don't need to hassle, just add to the mix
Bring a hot dish, a salad, dessert, or a stew
If you can, something yummy, to nourish a few

Sign up, if you're psyched, for the open mic
Or sit back and listen, if that's what you'd like
Share a poem, a story, a solo, or song
Tap your feet, clap your hands, or perhaps hum along

All ages are welcome, all talents are relished
It's a pretty sweet scene, I don't think we embellish
Truth be told, there's not much, that you must do
Apart from this one thing: that is, to bring you!

What : Our Monthly FUUSB Potluck and Coffeehouse
Who : Everyone! Friends and family welcome
Where : The Parlors, First UU Society of Burlington
When : Saturday, September 14, 6-8:30 p.m.
Bring : A potluck dish, a song, story or poem to perform, yourself

Signing Sunday - September 15
Sarah Russell

Did you know? If you've taken the New UU classes and made a pledge of financial support to the First UU of Burlington but have never signed the Member book, you are still not an official member! The final step of signing the Member Book is quick and easy but sometimes gets overlooked, so we offer regular opportunities for those who have done everything but "sign on the dotted line" to do just that. You can arrange to sign the book at any convenient time, but to make it even easier we have a Signing Sunday on the third Sunday of each month. On Signing Sundays the Member Book is available in the Sanctuary right after each service for those who are ready to sign. The next Signing Sunday is September 15  so "come on down" and make it official!

From the Membership Team

Member Parking Passes
Our Facilities Manager, David McFeeters, will be selling member parking passes  after the service on Sunday, September 15, on the second floor of the Meeting House.
Passes allow members to park in the Meeting House Oval for up to three hours at any time during the week.  Because we have had fewer parking spaces available, we will only be able to sell 40 passes this year. Also, t he cost of passes will be raised to $40. There will be no discount for purchasing two passes. We will not be selling passes before September 15. After this, passes will be available on a first come, first served basis. Please contact David for more information:
[email protected]  or 862-5630 ext. 23. Thank you.

From the UUA: Join the Climate Strikes on September 20!

On Friday, September 20, three days before the UN Climate Summit in NYC, young people and adults will strike all across the US and the world to demand transformative action be taken to address the climate crisis. We are crafting the solutions we need that align with the values and principles of our faith. We know we will need to transition away from industries and practices that compromise our dignity. By growing and uniting the multigenerational climate movement, the strike is the launch of a new era for just and equitable climate action.

Run (or Walk!) for JUMP on September 21!

Yuuth Group Advisors Needed
Gabriel Ely, Youth Ministry Coordinator

Could you benefit from youthful inspiration? Our wonderfully thoughtful group of yuuth is looking for new advisors! Our regular Yuuth Group meetings are on Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. and include identity building, exploring values, local service, pizza, and lots of fun! We're building a team of advisors who are able to attend a meeting about once a month with additional opportunities to chaperone events, or even the annual service trip. There will also be opportunities for advisors to get together, build skills, and reflect on our experiences, so if this feels a little outside of your comfort zone, that's okay.

If you're interested, want to dip your toe in the water, or have questions, let me know!

Gabriel

purple-water-flowers.jpg Sarah Russell

Thank you to everyone in our FUUSB community who contributed and came together for Kathy Bonilla's memorial service this past Sunday afternoon. We honored her memory during the service with wonderful stories and memories which described who Kathy was from all parts of her life. Our community came through with wonderful food and drink for the reception, which her family and friends truly appreciated. It was good to see her granddaughters supported by their peers, and to know that we will be seeing them around the Meeting House. Kathy's ashes were interred in our Memorial Garden after the service. Thanks again to everyone who made this a very special day in the celebration of her life.

Dishes to Take Home
