After attending the University of Washington (B.A., 1971), Holl continued his architectural studies in Rome and London. On returning to the United States, he established a practice in New York City, where he also served on the faculty of Columbia University from 1981. He became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2000.
Holl's work includes large buildings in many cities around the world, among them the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki, the Nanjing Sifang Art Museum in Nanjing, China, an addition to and renovation of the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek (American Memorial Library) in Berlin, and an annex to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. His later work concentrated on urban-scale mixed residential and commercial projects in China, notably the Linked Hybrid, a building complex containing apartments, hotels, schools, and restaurants in Beijing, and the Vanke Centre, a "horizontal skyscraper" in Shenzhen. Among his many honors are the Alvar Aalto Medal (1998), the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for architecture (2002), the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal (2012), and the Japan Art Association's Praemium Imperiale prize for architecture (2014).

EKCLandmarks Commission Looking for Architects to Volunteer to Serve on the Architectural Review Committee
The Urban Design Team of Planning & Design Services in Louisville is staff to the Landmarks Commission and help process Certificates of Appropriateness for the 7 local preservation districts and individual landmarks. Each of these districts has an Architectural Review Committee (ARC) comprised of specific positions including an architect. We need architects that would like to volunteer for our ARCs. We would prefer if the architects live or work in the district they want to serve and have a demonstrated interest in historic preservation.

Each ARC can meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month, usually around 5:30pm. Hearing times can fluctuate depending on the volume of cases scheduled. Special hearing dates are sometimes scheduled to accommodate specific projects. The estimated time commitment for ARC members is approximately 20 hours per year. All volunteer ARC members will serve a three year term. Members may be appointed to additional terms by the Landmarks Commission.

We need architects for the following ARCs: Old Louisville, Limerick, Butchertown, West Main Street, and Cherokee Triangle.

Any interested person may apply online with the following link:

Upon a review of all candidates, the new member will be appointed by the Landmarks Commission with final approval by Metro Council.
