Rector's Ramblings

I've shared these thoughts before, most recently on the 15th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Back then, it was a Sunday, and I shaped my thoughts for that particular sermon. These stories of those who died on September 11 is how I live my pledge to "never forget". I wrote the original version about ten years ago, and I reread it periodically to remind myself that it was not a generic tragedy. I still get emotional when I read it. It's long, I warn you, yet I don't apologize for its length.
Let us not forget the events of September 11, nor the outpouring of love that followed, and certainly not the sustaining presence and guidance of the God of love who works to bring the peaceable kingdom to bear on this side of heaven.

Worship

Worship Schedule
Join us for weekly worship at Christ Church. Regular weekend worship services take place on Saturdays at 5:30 pm at St. Ignatius Chapel, on Demere Road, and on Sundays at 8:00 am, 9:15 am (church), 9:15 am (parish hall) and 11:15 am at Christ Church, Frederica.  Kidurgy, our Liturgy of the Word for younger children, takes place during the 9:15 am worship service at Christ Church. On Wednesdays, at 12:00 pm, a Healing service is held at Christ Church.
Music Corner
The Choristers are happy to be singing again!

Choirs have launched for the 2019-2020 Season!  As always, there is open enrollment and new members are embraced.

The next two months will incorporate parts of the Frederica Setting of the service music in the 9:15 am and 11:15 am liturgies, in the historic church. By living our responsibility to care for our earth's resources, only the text of the Gloria and Sanctus will be printed in the service bulletins. To help familiarize people with the music, here are the links to the Frederica Setting of the Gloria (listen here) and the Sanctus (listen here)

The Kyrie and Agnus Dei will be utilized during Advent and Lent. In February the settings for Choral Evensong will be introduced.

Adult Sunday Morning Class
The Adult  Sunday  Class  has begun a new study entitled  The Gospel According to Leviticus . Read more about this book  here . All are invited to join us. The class meets in the Adult Sunday classroom in the Parish House. For more information, contact Bob Brown at [email protected] .
Women's Book Study
The women's study group meets on Thursdays at 1:00 pm in the parish hall.
The group is discussing  Learning to Walk in the Dark,  by Barbara Brown Taylor.  In this book,  Taylor asks us to put aside our fears and anxieties and to explore all that God has to teach us "in the dark". Through darkness we find courage, we understand the world in new ways, and we feel God's presence around us, guiding us through things seen and unseen. Often, it is while we are in the dark that we grow the most. With her characteristic charm and literary wisdom, Taylor is our guide through a spirituality of the nighttime, teaching us how to find our footing in times of uncertainty and giving us strength and hope to face all of life's challenging moments. Books are available in the bookstore for $11.00.  Contact: Mtr. Ashton Williston at [email protected] .
Men's Study Group
The Men's Discussion Group, which meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 am, has resumed meeti ng for the fall. For more information, please contact Te Turner at [email protected] .
Wednesday Afternoon Book Study
Formed In Love Study  - Wednesdays in September, with a simple lunch and one-hour discussion

On Wednesdays, at 1:00 pm, Fr. Tom is leading a four-week discussion of Scott Bader-Saye's volume from the New Church Teaching Series,  Formed by Love . Bader-Saye examines the moral life through the lens of the Episcopal Church and its traditions. Topics include creation, incarnation, holiness, sacrament, scripture, and "via media." The author also tackles the big moral questions: Who am I? Why am I here? What are good and evil? What are right and wrong? - and examines how an Episcopal approach might shape a typical day by examining Morning Prayer and Compline as moral formation, in between discussing work,  eating, and playing. Books are $13 and available in the bookstore. Contact: Fr. Tom at [email protected]

Outreach

Helping Our Neighbors Near and Far
Helping our neighbors, whoever they are and wherever they are, is what we're called to do. You can help those affected by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas and Carolinas, by donating to Episcopal Relief and Development at https://www.episcopalrelief.org or by check to Christ Church, noting Hurricane Relief in the memo line.

To help those locally who may be suffering hardship due to jobs suspended by the recent hurricane evacuation and the closure of the port, please consider a donation to the Christ Church Door Ministry emergency financial aid fund. Write Door Ministry in the memo line of your check.

To support the mission of our local Seafarers' Center, which has been instrumental in aiding the crew members of the capsized cargo ship, Golden Ray, go to
https://www.seafarerscenter.org , or you may send a check made out to the International Seafarers' Center at 3017 Newcastle Street Brunswick, GA 31520.
Help for Food Service Workers

The Episcopal Church in South Carolina (ECSC), the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia (EDG) and Giving Kitchen (GK) are proud to announce a partnership bringing aid to food service workers experiencing hardship in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian in Coastal Georgia and Coastal South Carolina. Funded through a grant from Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD), will provide grocery gift cards to food service workers impacted by the slow moving but devastating storm.

Food service workers in Glynn County evacuation zones who experienced loss of wages or evacuation costs as a result of Hurricane Dorian may apply for relief from Giving Kitchen through a partnership with the Episcopal Church. Two local congregations will be distribution sites for assistance. This applies to food service workers only. For complete information, click here
Backpack Buddies - Next Packing on Sept. 18
This dedicated crew packed 850 bags in 40 minutes on Sept. 11, 2019.

School has begun and Christ Church is once again feeding hungry students on the weekends through the Backpack Buddies program. This year, we will be feeding 500+ students and need all the help we can get on packing days! The schedule for September and October is:

September 18, at 10:00 am and October 2, 16 & 30, also at 10:00 am, in the Parish Hall. Please join us!

You can also help by sponsoring a child for $100 for the school year or $50 for half the year.  Just make your check payable to Christ Church, Frederica , and write Backpack Buddies in the memo line. For more information, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected]

International Seafarers Center Night Out
The International Seafarers Center is hosting its 19th annual International Night Out on Friday, September 27, at 6:00 pm. This year's event will take place at the Sea Palms Resort and Conference Center, and will feature fine international cuisines and beers and wine from around the world. Tickets are $110 and all proceeds go to support the ministry of the Seafarers Center in Brunswick. Please contact Sherry, at 912-267-0631, to order tickets, or you may order online at www.seafarerscenter.org
The International Seafarers' Center has recently been in the news, as they received and took care of the crew members of the Golden Ray cargo ship, which capsized in the St. Simons Sound early this past Sunday morning. Crew members were given hot meals, new clothing, access to the internet, Bibles to keep and transportation to local stores and hotels. This is not unusual! It's the same type of hospitality that is shown regularly to the thousands of mariners that visit the Port of Brunswick each year!
If you'd like to be part of this ministry and help folks from all around the world, consider becoming a volunteer at the International Seafarers' Center. Meet the men and women from 70 different nations, who visit our ports yearly in Brunswick. Go aboard the big ships, visit with our seafaring friends through hospitality or be a driver. For more information call 912-267-0631.

Celebrating Our Friends at Christ Church
Maggie Jenkins ran onto the playground and into the choir when she was a second grader at Oglethorpe Elementary School. The Jenkins family, Mom, Amy, and Dad, Andy, have since joined Christ Church. (Father Tom baptized Maggie!) Now a sophomore at Glynn Academy, Maggie is a
member of the Adult Choir, an Acolyte and can be counted on to help with any major activity at Christ Church, from Vacation Bible School, to the ECW Tour of Homes. In addition to her beautiful singing, Maggie, like many of our children and youth, has another amazing talent resulting from years of study and discipline.

Maggie trains at The Brick, aka the Golden Isles Martial Arts Academy. She started at age 7 and has been at it for 8 years. She will be heading to the World Games in London (October 20-28) as a member of the US Martial Arts Team. She recently won a grand championship in traditional kata at the Survivor tournament on Jekyll and also won a grand championship at the Dixieland tournament in Augusta, where she won a $500 scholarship fund. The grand championship was for traditional weapons kata.

We're very excited for our multi-talented Maggie and wish her all the best at the World Games this fall!

Nominations Open for Convention Delegates

With the election of the next Bishop of Georgia scheduled for this upcoming convention, and with the new allocation of delegates which gives Christ Church four (4) delegates, it is time to get up to speed on our procedures.

You may nominate yourself or anyone else by providing the name(s) to the Rector or one of the Wardens by September 13.  Elections will be held by ballot on October 12/13. All Communicants in Good Standing are eligible for nomination and able to vote. We will elect delegates to the 2020 convention at our next Annual Meeting in January, at the same time we elect for Vestry.
