It’s been a very productive end of summer and we continue to grow - adding some exciting new members including two leading global OEMs and a Provincial Energy Provider. As we get closer to the 200-member milestone, there is clearly a growing interest in electric mobility and that EMC continues to the association of choice on this important public policy issue. This week EMC launched our membership survey – an important tool to identify where we need to focus our efforts in order to best serve our members. If you have not already, please take the time to complete the survey!
Our advocacy work continued through the end of the summer with submissions on the Clean Fuel Standards, a meeting with the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change and a press release in partnership with a number of national associations highlighting the significant potential GHG reduction of a national clean fuels strategy. As we head into the Fall election campaign, EMC will be looking at all party platforms to assess their support for the transition to electric mobility. Whichever party ends up forming the government in a few weeks’ time, we hope that they will continue to support policies that strongly encourage electric mobility.
Finally, preparation for EV2020VE is now in full swing. The Conference is scheduled for April 27-30 at the Hilton Meadowvale Hotel in Mississauga, Ontario and promises to be our biggest and conference to date. Under the leadership of Catherine Kargas, a team is assembling to ensure that we bring leading edge topics and speakers to our podiums and Kiana is working hard to secure top-notch sponsorship. According to EMC’s latest report, the popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) continues to grow as market share in the 2nd quarter reached more than 3% in the country, a significant increase of just under 1% over the last year.
|
|
|
Q2-2019 EV Sales Highlights:
- 34% growth in EV sales compared to Q2-2018
- 174% increase in EV sales in British Columbia and 93% in Quebec compared to Q2-2018, but a decrease in Ontario of 58%
- Outside of the ‘Big 3’ provinces, sales growth has been considerable with growth of 166% in New Brunswick, 133% in Saskatchewan and 99% in Alberta – showing that demand for EVs is growing across Canada
- EV market share in Canada during Q2-2019: 3.3%

EMC and Canada's National Clean Fuel Associations Forecast 50Mt of GHG Reductions by 2030
|
On September 5, 2019, EMC and Canada's other national clean fuels associations issued a joint call for a national 'Clean Fuel Strategy' to meet Canada's greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals.
Based on a study by Navius Research,The associations forecast GHG emissions reductions of over 50 million tonnes (Mt) per year by 2030 through greater production and use of renewable energy in Canada, including 16Mt of GHG reductions through the electrification of light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, including buses. In fact there is even greater potential to achieve stronger results

Hydro-Québec and Desjardins open first EV superstation
|
On Aug. 19, Desjardins and Hydro-Québec announced a “superstation” was open at the Complexe Desjardins in Quartier des Spectacles in Montreal. The site features four 50-kilowatt charging stations.
The opening is the first step in a larger initiative that will see the companies install 200 charging stations at caisse locations in Quebec and Eastern Ontario. The partners plan to have all 200 of the stations installed by 2021.

Zero-Emission Vehicle Awareness Initiative

Natural Resources Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Awareness Initiative supports projects that aim to increase awareness of ZEVs through education and outreach; advance knowledge and support capacity-building; increase awareness of public charging and refueling infrastructure activities; and ultimately support a greater adoption of ZEVs by Canadians.
Eligible Recipients can apply for funding

CanadianTrade Mission in India
|
Global Affairs Canada is undertaking the “Canadian Technology for Next Generation Vehicles, Transportation Systems and Services” mission to India, which will take place from November 25-29, 2019, in New Delhi and Bangalore, India.
The automotive industry is a significant contributor to both Canada and India’s economies. This mission will focus on introducing Canadian SMEs to potential Indian partners for industrial R&D collaboration specific to applications in e-mobility, alternative fuels, advanced manufacturing and automation, and composites as they apply to the automotive industry.

Mandatory residential EV chargers in UK
|
The United Kingdom’s Department of Transport is proposing to make EV chargers in new residential buildings mandatory.
The UK’s new protocol, which applies only in England and is slated to take effect in 2020, requires new residential buildings with one parking space to have at least a seven kilowatt charger and a universal socket. Details were recently laid out in
a government consultation that closes on October 7. The UK’s move is said to be a first for a national government.
