DINE AND LEARN: TEAM HYPERLYNX & THE SPACEX HYPERLOOP COMPETITION by Andrew Gras
Team Hyperlynx started as a Mechanical Engineering senior design project but has since been established as a continuing campus organization. The team is multi-disciplinary and consists of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and computer science majors working together to build a pod. Originally founded in 2015, the team competed in the first annual SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition, which brought teams from all over the world to SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, CA. In 2013 Elon Musk released his white paper on the Hyperloop, a network of tubes for pods to travel through at supersonic speeds, shortening commutes and reducing traffic across the globe. A
ndrew is the Electrical Lead for Team Hyperlynx, the UCD Hyperloop competition team.

Don't Get Caught in one of the Maker Traps
|
There are some very prolific, low cost single board computers available for the "maker" market. Does this mean these platforms are good candidates to base a customized product? Possibly not. Although fantastic for educational and hobby projects, developers may find themselves locked out from a low volume custom PCB build. In the
rapid prototype philosophy, off the shelf boards are employed to allow for parallel software and hardware development effort. The custom fabrication begins in low volume, to find errors early, during laboratory and field testing. If the hardware design is closed (e.g. schematics and PCB files are not available), or the key components are not available in singles from distributors, then software momentum will be lost on a dead end path. Consider avoiding this trap by starting with an
open source hardware
design and checking the Bill of Materials for component availability. Open source boards include the Arduino, Beagle Bone, DragonBoard, and many other powerful ARM platforms. -DF
