Wrapping Up Another Year of Great Summer Camps!

Students working on their painting techniques during Creative Expression Camp
This summer Access Youth Academy provided 4 weeks of camp for our students. Week one was all about artistic expression. Students were able to participate in activities such as painting, dance, writing and drama. This was a wonderful week where students were able to try something new and discover their creative sides.
Students volunteer at the EarthLab_ a facility that is preparing students to enter the 8 million STEM jobs anticipated in the near future

Week two's theme was community activism. Students worked on projects such as  reviewing and signing the Birmingham Pledge for building a just and peaceful society, then they drafted and signed pledges for how they want to positively shape their own communities. They got out into their communities and  visited such places as the City Heights Coffee House, a non-profit cafe that serves culturally authentic drinks and empowers the City Heights community by employing at-risk youth. Another highlight was volunteering at EarthLab. Here students are engaged in state-of-the-art science and technology education while making valuable contributions to the improvement of their watershed. This week created valuable connections between our students and their communities.

Along with many of our new students, Academic Coordinator Conor Robinson
joined in to improve his squash game.

The third and fourth weeks of camp were squash intensives. Our courts were open for students to come and improve their game. Coaching was led by our Executive Director, Renato Paiva, and other amazingly dedicated and talented volunteers.  It's been a great summer full of new experiences and continued learning throughout the entire Access team!
