Dear Friend:
What a summer we've had so far at the Fleet Science Center! From our sold-out summer camps, our extended hours on Friday (open until 8 p.m.) and our newly reinvigorated live science shows, there's never a shortage of exciting things happening at the Fleet. As I shared in last month's Innovator, our efforts to expand the reach of our education and engagement programs from 83% to 100% of zip codes in San Diego County requires some creative thinking. Reaching our goal of 100% means we need to think outside of our walls to serve as wide of an audience as possible.
As such, Comic-Con week was a particularly exciting time for us, as we proudly hosted three panels this year, including:
- Bada** Female Scientists in the Lab and on the Screen
- Genetic Mutations-Will We All Be Metahumans One Day?
- Popular Science-Beyond Entertainment (with the MythBusters)
We were also proud to offer an exclusive Comic-Con Edition of our Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar®, where Comic-Con attendees could approach local scientists and ask any questions they had about science.
Speaking of the MythBusters, it was our pleasure to host original MythBusters Tory Belleci, Kari Byron and Grant Imahara for a one-night-only, sold out evening at the Fleet, where they shared behind-the-scenes stories, their lives before MythBusters and insider knowledge about their current and future projects. Tory, Kari and Grant then explored the MythBusters exhibit with our audience members and then generously took the time to meet and sign autographs for the fans in attendance. Thank you, MythBusters!
As some of the Fleet's closest friends, you understand firsthand our mission to connect our
entire community to the power and possibilities of science. Science plays a significant role in pop culture whether through action-packed superhero movies, television shows that forecast centuries into the future, or comic book characters whose stories have captivated our attention for decades. As a result, science nurtures the curiosity of kids of all ages in San Diego.

Jason Latimer, Curator of Impossible Science for the Fleet, returns to the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater with a special, limited-engagement performance of the Impossible Science Experience. This live show-held in conjunction with the Fleet's Fourth Annual Impossible Science Festival-combines Jason's jaw-dropping illusions with physics, psychology, chemistry, mathematics and technology.
