Market News
-----------------
July has arrived and this weekend HFM will be packed with fresh produce, beautiful flowers, baked treats and everything else you need for a wonderful summer Saturday. Green and yellow beans are ready for roasting, steaming, and snacking over at Deep Roots and Sun Gold Farms, and pickling cucumbers and dill are in at Big B Farm
Herr's Family Farm will be adding to their wide selection of fresh cut flowers this week with their first sunflowers of the season. Stop by their booth near the 44th St entrance to grab some.
Those who woke up bright and early last week managed to grab some of the first cherry tomatoes of the season. If you'd like a pint this week for salads or snacking be sure to get to market early again, as these delicious treats are sure to sell out.
With all this fresh fruit filling our vendor's stalls this week, its safe to say that we are right in the middle of pie season! Grab some sour cherries at Kiyokawa Family Orchards and Peak Forest Fruit or some peaches from Maryhill Fruit Company this Saturday for a sweet summer pie.
This Saturday the Hollywood Lions Club will be collecting used eyeglasses to distribute to those in need. Bring your old glasses to their tent in our community booth area (across from Happy Harvest Farm).
Got any extra shopping bags laying around? We are  collecting durable, reusable shopping bags for community use at the market. If you have any extra you can part with, please leave them in the metal bins on either end of Hancock St for any forgetful shoppers to grab.
Power of Produce kids program continues every Saturday!

We had a great time last Saturday with our weekly' POP Club activity - raspberry jam making! Thanks to Deep Roots Farm and Happy Harvest Farm for donating berries. For those of you who missed the activity, here's the simple recipe, easy to make at home:

No-cook raspberry jam

1/4 cup of fruit
1/4 cup sugar
2.25 tsp Certo liquid pectin
.75 tsp lemon juice

Mash all ingredients together and allow sugar to dissolve. Pectin should set in 6-8 hours. Refrigerate or freeze.

This is typically stored in jars but we prepared it for storage in quart sized Ziploc bags.

Our weekly POP Club for kids continues this Saturday with a farmers market scavenger hunt!

Remember, we'll be offering free, fun and educational kids activities (for ages 5 to 12) EVERY SATURDAY at the farmers market through September 1st. And kids who participate get $2 in farmers market tokens to spend on fruits and veggies. Stop by the POP Club booth this Saturday and join in!
Street painting is just a week away!
 -------------------
In 2016, over 100 volunteers came out to paint the Hollywood Garden Mural on NE Hancock Street between 44th and 45th - a block which hosts our farmers market each Saturday. Taking its inspiration from the bountiful produce on display at the farmers market, the mural takes the form of a garden, with a path of stepping stones winding its way around fruits, vegetables and vines. This is one of the largest street paintings in Portland, stretching curb-to-curb along 100 feet of Hancock Street. On market day, it serves as a beautiful carpet for the farmers market, and throughout the week it leaves a reminder of the market on the street.

Two years later it's time to repaint the mural. Mark your calendars: we will be re-painting on Sunday, July 15th, from 10am to 4pm. See our Facebook event for more details and to invite your friends!
Senior Day is next Saturday, July 14th!
 -------------------
One week from this Saturday ( July 14th) is our annual Senior Day! Seniors 65 and older can stop by the information booth on this day and pick up coupons for 20% off purchases at Hollywood Farmers Market that day. They can also enter a raffle to receive a free basket of farmers market goodies!

Mixed Berry Flats
Liepold Farms
The ever popular "pick your six" originated here! Liepold Farms has been a vendor at Hollywood Farmers Market since the first season in 1997, and they started encouraging shoppers to pick their six shortly after - i.e. choose six pints of different berries in a half-flat. This Saturday, they'll have strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries. Come early for the best choice!

Ground Yak
Pine Mountain Ranch
Did you know yak meat regularly wins taste tests as the best tasting ground meat in the world? With 78% less fat than beef and tons of flavor, whenever yak is taste tested against other ground meats, it wins! In addition to ground yak, Pine Mountain Ranch also has yak steaks and sausages. Ask at their booth for more info!

Strawberry Rhubarb Drinking Vinegar
Sage & Sea Farms
Sage & Sea Farms makes small-batch flavored drinking vinegars, commonly called "shrubs". Simply mix one part syrup with five parts seltzer or other mixer, or try it mixed in a salad dressing. All of Sage & Sea's produce comes from local farms - the Strawberry Rhubarb shrub features strawberries from Happy Harvest Farm.
