FAR Scholarship Students Help with Annual Apricot Harvest
Apricot season in Armenia means it's time for FAR's scholarship students to help out with the harvest. Each year, about two dozen students volunteer to help out with the harvest as a way of giving back to FAR and to their community. This year, 21 students braved the heat to pick apricots in Armarvir Province. FAR has helped each farmer to develop their businesses, and in return the farmers have agreed to donate a portion of dried fruit to FAR's beneficiaries each year. "This is good work that is important and useful in all respects. Now, 1,000 of our program beneficiaries will be able to enjoy dried apricots during the coming winter," said Eduard Karapetyan, FAR's Education and Science Programs Manager. To read more, go to:

EAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD
Each year on the Sunday closest to the date of August 14, the Armenian Church celebrates the Feast of the Assumption of St. Mary, the Holy Mother of God. In the Calendar of the Armenian Church, this feast is the fourth of five major feasts that are commemorated, and is the oldest one dedicated to St. Mary.
According to tradition, following the Ascension of Christ, Mary lived out the rest of her days in Jerusalem, cared for by St. John the Evangelist. She died in Jerusalem some 15 years after Christ's Ascension and was buried in her family tomb in Gethsemane.
After she passed away, all the apostles-save Bartholomew who was absent at that time-conducted her funeral with great ceremony at a cave-like tomb in the Garden of Gethsemane. Later, St. Bartholomew returned and wished to see Mary one last time.
He convinced the apostles to open the tomb, but they could not find her body inside. Angels' voices were heard for three days and nights. The apostles interpreted the angels' singing as a sign that our Lord had assumed, or taken up, his mother into heaven as he had promised her.
They found the empty tomb a confirmation of that promise for she had not been dead, but had fallen asleep. For this reason, the church refers to the end of Mary's earthly life as "the dormition" rather than "death."
The Armenian Church has a deep and abiding respect towards St. Mary. Special emphasis is placed on her being a mother, her honesty, her unique spirit of humility, her virtuous behavior and her unselfish dedication.

Restoring the Mother Cathedral
For several years now, a beehive of scaffolding has surrounded the Mother Cathedral of the Armenian Church, as architects and artisans undertake the restoration of the Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin.
Specialists from Italy, at the request of His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, reviewed the structural integrity of the cathedral in 2012, and made plans for its repair and protection from seismic activity. Phases of the project have reinforced and refurbished some of the famous features of the cathedral, including the southern bell tower, the main dome, and the great cross that stands atop the highest point of the structure.
The cathedral was established in the early 4th century by St. Gregory the Illuminator, and the core of the present structure dates from the 5th century. But the visible cathedral of today reveals different Armenian architectural styles from the 17th through 19th centuries, representing the constructive legacies of several supreme patriarchs.
In more recent times, the cathedral has undergone restoration efforts under the pontificates of His Holiness Vasken I, and now His Holiness Karekin II. To view a video detailing the current work being done,

Keeping a Finger on the Pulse of Medicine
"The medical world is rapidly evolving, which makes the Fund for Armenian Relief's Continuing Medical Education (CME) program a necessity," says Dr. Murad Grigoryan. "It's the way I've been able to keep my finger on the pulse of medicine."
Dr. Grigoryan, director of the Aygedzor Medical Center, is a three-time participant in FAR's CME program. He has been providing medical care to the residents of Aygedzor and Chinari villages for the past 25 years, and is the only physician in the area who can perform surgery and emergency treatment.
CME has played a major role in his professional development, improving his skills, bringing him into contact with peers, and giving him access to new equipment and treatment techniques he can adopt in his own practice in rural Armenia.

Ղուկասի 2.1-7
1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
Luke 2.1-7
