PHOTOS: Team FCUSD kicks off year with annual "huddle"
Hundreds of FCUSD teachers and employees packed into the gym at Folsom High School on Thursday, Aug. 9 to reconnect and inspire each other at Folsom Cordova's annual back-to-school kickoff and "huddle."

Superintendent Sarah Koligian, Ed.D., led the attendees in a celebration of the past years' successes and expressions of gratitude to the numerous employees who help keep the District and its schools running even through the summer. She also charged the crowd to think of the ways they can be daily inspirations for every child, and leaders in the creation of positive Culture, Climate, and Connectedness on campus.

Families, students learn together at annual Summer Academy
The 2018 Family Engagement Summer Academy was offered at two times this year. The daytime academy focused on "Fun, Food Science" while the evening academy highlighted "Maker Space."

The Academy, held at Williamson Elementary was free for currently enrolled Folsom Cordova students grades 1-6. At the four-week camp, families learned together through literacy and STEM activities, as well as educational games.
Some highlights from this year's daytime camp session included students and families learning about bees and different types of honey from guest speaker, Rancho Cordova Bee Keeper Andy Kopac.

Another interesting lesson involved insects that are considered cuisine and eaten around the world, taught by guest speaker, Dr. Jimmy Spitzer, a biology professor at Sac State.

The evening, or twilight, sessions' theme is "Maker Space," where student families are engaged in innovation through coding, robotics and other technology.

Learn more about music education options for your student
For decades, Folsom Cordova has prioritized music education across its schools and grade levels. In fact, music is mandatory for all elementary students in grades 4 and 5 so children have the opportunity to explore musical interests at an early age.

In elementary school, students can take either general music, string or band instruments and receive instruction twice a week. Once students move onto the secondary level, middle and high school, they have the opportunity to further their musical talents. There is such a talented and dedicated group of music teachers at all grade levels that students can move into any direction they desire.

At the high school level, there are even more class options ranging from jazz, guitar, contemporary music, marching band and many more.
