Congratulations, Class of 2020!
On Thursday, May 21, students with the Class of 2020 came to campus through individual appointments as we celebrated each of them through Diploma Conferment Ceremonies.  Students were accompanied by family members who presented  the diploma and a single yellow rose to their graduate.

A photo album featuring all of the Diploma Conferment Ceremonies  will be posted to social media in the coming week. Enjoy this YouTube video featuring a few moments from the ceremonies.  We are so proud of you, Class of 2020!

Seeking Volunteers to Help with School Garden
The CSS garden is where students explore how food is grown and what is involved. Through the Adopt-a-Crop program, students in the Children's School plant seeds and harvest the crops. Unfortunately, they weren't able to plant seeds this spring because of COVID-19, but we hope to keep the garden program moving forward. CSS families are invited to help tend to the garden during the summer.

Upper School Science Teacher Natalie Hanson, who spearheaded the program because she sees an immense value in a school garden, planted seeds this past weekend and set up hail coverings that Upper School students helped build last fall. Families that volunteer will help with tasks such as watering, pulling weeds, and repairing damaged raised beds. Families may also sponsor a bed on behalf of their student's grade.

To sign up, visit volunteersignup.org/J9RAM. Ms. Hanson will coordinate with families individually for a walk-through of the garden to explain tasks and coordinate days and times for them to help. For more information, please email Ms. Hanson at [email protected].
Faces of CSS: Learn About Our Faculty & Staff
What is one thing you enjoy about CSS? I love the campus itself. I have missed driving by the pond every day and spotting ducklings or turtles or great blue herons, along with several grazing deer or the occasional bear in the field or by the creek. I enjoy looking out of my classroom window at the changing leaves on the trees on the quad and seeing the other buildings full of so many great people whom I admire and care about. -Amy Johnson-Smith, Upper School English

What is your favorite spot in the world? My favorite spot in the world would be on a basketball court, any court, anywhere in the world. A basketball court is my safe place, my home away from home. While growing up, a basketball court offered me solace, control, and self-reliance when I needed to escape or find a routine. To rediscover my youth, all I have to do is grab a basketball and step onto a court, any court, anywhere in the world. -Vicki Vaughan, Athletic Director

What is one thing you enjoy about CSS? I love the tight-knit community that is characteristic of CSS. The smaller class sizes allow for deeper relationships with students and parents. This, along with an amazing group of colleagues, is just a few, but really important, factors that keep me coming back every year. -Alex Schilperoort, 3rd grade

CSS Summer Camps for 2020 Cancelled
The Colorado Springs School has been providing summer camp experiences for more than 30 years. While we were looking forward to offering various camps this summer, we have cancelled all summer camps for 2020 as a safety precaution due to COVID-19. Please email Ann Runte at [email protected] for additional information.
ROAR: Opportunities
Donations for the Spring 2021 Garage Sale
Have you been spring cleaning? Your Parents Association garage sale team, Abby Ortega and Michelle Gates, are gearing up for the spring 2021 garage sale, which is held every two years. They will be accepting donations once campus re-opens. Please box up those household goods, toys, books, clothes, small furniture, and other treasures. Large items will be collected once a storage space is secured. If you have questions or a storage space for larger items, please contact Michelle Gates at (719) 440-2251 or [email protected] .
ROAR: Achievements
Senior Spotlight: Congratulations, Sarina M. '20!
During your entire time at CSS, who has been the faculty member that had a significant impact on your life?  Coach Vaughan has had a significant impact on my life. From teaching me how to tie my shoes in 1st grade all the way to helping me lead a basketball team to a record breaking season she has been by my side. She is always there to talk about anything and has really helped me grow.

Senior Spotlight: Congratulations, Hina S. '20!
Give a shout-out to that person/people who made your CSS story possible. I want to thank my host family for welcoming me into their family and letting me spend my last 7 years with them! Without them, I wouldn't be where I am right now. (Hina's host family is CSS Director of Admission Joy Maguire-Parsons and her family.)

Senior Spotlight: Congratulations, Estin N. '20!
During your entire time at CSS, who has been the faculty member that had a significant impact on your life? There are two of them, since I am a scientist in thought and an actor in spirit. Mr. Johnson helped me really solidify my passion for science; I was always intrigued by it but fell deeply entranced by its methods, discoveries, and beauty. In astronomy, I really found something that just clicked with me. I became deeply engrossed in the subject and have made it a goal in my life to learn as much as I can about it. Mr. Johnson's teaching helped me truly enjoy math with Calculus, and it has been one of the only math classes I have really been invested in and felt excited to learn about every day. Ms. Bray has helped me really grow as a person and helped me figure out who I am, ironically enough, by showing me how to be someone else. In theater through Ms. Bray's direction, I have learned how to deal with my own internal affairs through acting and how to maintain composure on the outside while still addressing and processing my thoughts and feelings. Ms. Bray has not just talked to me about and helped me understand what it means to be Judd Fry, or Tevye, or Arthur Roeder, or Pantalone de Bisignosi, but what it means to be Estin.

Senior Spotlight: Congratulations, Kate G. '20!
How has CSS prepared you for a dynamic world? CSS has taught me to trust myself and my abilities during challenging and stressful times. Even when I don't think I am able to do something or get through a difficult task, I know that with the skills I learned and experiences I had at CSS, I can and will get through it.

Senior Spotlight: Congratulations, Hayden H. '20!
Give a shout-out to that person/people who made your CSS story possible.  Sam J., Tiffany J., Matthew P., and Abrielle S. They made this possible because they were with me since literally day one.

Senior Spotlight: Congratulations, Kylie C. '20!
We have hundreds of generous donors who support The Colorado Springs School's Annual every year - in 10 words or less, how would you thank them?  Thanks for creating a place that's so hard to leave.

Senior Spotlight: Congratulations, Spencer B. '20!
What has been your most challenging class at CSS, and what tools did you gain from the class? AP Lit. I learned to use my time much better, as well as write much stronger papers.

Senior Spotlight: Congratulations, Sam J. '20!
How has CSS prepared you for a dynamic world?  I've done a lot! Especially through ECS. I've always said that I've had the best ECS line-up of all time: Taos, Iron Pour, Tall Ships, Spain. Each one is so different from the other that it has given me a chance to experience so many different opportunities in my life.

2020-2021 Major Dates Calendar
We are excited to announce and share with optimism the release of the 2020-2021 Major Dates Calendar. Upon review, we hope that you will take the time to notice that many, if not all traditional events, remain on the schedule. Members of the administration team and the CSS faculty have invested a great deal of time and energy into preserving the integrity of our schedule with a particular focus on building school culture throughout the year. It is important that we do not jump to any conclusions at this time as to what the start of the school year will look like. We do know that we welcome a physical return to campus, but close adherence to local, state, and federal guidelines will determine if a change in the course of action is warranted. As a result, planning for the 2020-2021 school year is ongoing and requires the school to respond with agility, grace, and a heavy dose of patience.
