Summer Tenet - Have Fun
Aaah, summer - that long anticipated stretch of lazy, lingering days, free of responsibility and rife with possibility. It's a time to hunt for insects, master handstands, practice swimming strokes, conquer trees, explore nooks and crannies, and make new friends.

While you are doing your best to stay cool from the summer heat, I hope you are able to take time for yourself and your family, enjoy some summer fun, and perhaps even a nice vacation with those you love. Integrating fun into your life, at home and at work, is an essential part of the personal and professional balance we are all trying to find. Take some time, chat with your co-workers, tell a joke, go get some ice cream, and enjoy the ride on this crazy journey called life!

May Updates
- In May, the board enjoyed the opportunity to meet live at the Spring meetings.
- The board spent time putting the finishing touches on the Spring meeting.
- The board reviewed the internal audit as well as stated the process to complete an external audit
- MSHP will be collaborating with MPA for our Fall meeting this year, keep an eye out for more information and hold your calendars for 9/6/18-9/9/18!
June Updates
- We said goodbye for the 2017-2018 board members and welcomed in the new board for their first official meeting.
- The board held its regular monthly meeting on June 7th virtually
- The board also met live at the Truman Medical Center on 6/19 to review last year's strategic plan and plan for the 2018-2019 year- more to come as soon as the plan is finalized!

Saint Louis College of Pharmacy
The 2017-18 academic year came to a close on May 12, as St. Louis College of Pharmacy celebrated the class of 2018 at its 150th Commencement. This year’s ceremony marked a milestone in the College’s history as it recognized the first graduates earning bachelor’s degrees in the College’s integrated Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Pharmacy program. With more than 400 degrees conferred, the 150th Commencement featured the largest class of graduates in the College’s history.

As usual, we have been very busy at the UMKC School of Pharmacy! While it would be impossible here to describe all that has been going on, I would like provide a brief update on recent activities at the school.

St. Louis College of Pharmacy - SSHP Update
Throughout the Spring Semester of the 2017-2018 academic year, the STLCOP SSHP chapter aimed to build upon and expand its initiatives with regards to community outreach and health-system service, professional development, and networking opportunities for its student members.

University of Missouri - Kansas City - SSHP Update
The spring and summer semesters at the UMKC School of Pharmacy are a little more relaxed than our fall semester. In February, our Columbia campus teamed up with MMSHP and the Ronald McDonald House to prepare meals for patients and families receiving care at the Women and Children's Hospital

Medication Saving Behaviors in Older Adults: Identifying and Managing a Barrier to Effective Healthcare
Medication hoarding in older adults is a barrier to effective healthcare that is difficult to define, identify, and manage. The DSM-5 classifies hoarding disorder as a problem with discarding possessions (regardless of their value) because of feeling the need to save things and experiencing distress about their disposal. Hoarding disorder is further characterized by clutter that interferes with the use of living space and clinically significant distress or functional impairment.

Excessive clutter may create an unsafe living environment and pose both tripping and fire hazards. Medication hoarding differs somewhat from generalized hoarding behavior: medications have inherent value, and medication hoarding may not substantially contribute to household clutter. However, the accumulation of unused or expired medications in the home carries the additional risk of accidental (or intentional) medication misuse and diversion.

Pharmacists' Role in Pain Management and Combating the Opioid Epidemic
|
Turn on your television or scroll through the internet, it won’t take long to see headlines related to the “opioid epidemic” or “opioid addiction”. Take a step further, a google search of “opioid” suggests topics such as crisis, abuse, and dependence, to note a few. Behind the media stir lies a deeply rooted issue that requires intervention from many angles. Since 1999, the number of opioid prescriptions in the United States has quadrupled.

While one may think this indicates better pain control, the amount of pain reported by Americans has remained the same. In that same time frame, 165,000 deaths have been attributed to prescription opioid overdose alone.

Newsletter Submission Guidelines
- Pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy students in Missouri are eligible to submit content for publication in the MSHP Newsletter. Student submissions need to include pharmacist oversight.
- Submit content to the current Newsletter Committee Chair on or before the established deadlines.
- CE and Featured Clinical Topics must be approved by the Newsletter Committee Chair in advance of article submission, to prevent duplicates. Duplicate articles submitted without advanced approval may not be published.
- Recommended length of submissions for committee, affiliate, college/schools of pharmacy, and student chapter reports is half to one page in length.
- Recommended length of submissions for featured clinical topics is 1 to 2 pages, without references.
- Recommended length of CE articles is individualized, based on the amount of CE provided.
- Recommended length of submission for other categories is 1 to 2 pages.
