Principal's Message

The Glendening family has so much to be thankful for! During the month of November all of our students received a new pair of shoes through our friends at Crossroads Church in Lithopolis . Our 5th grade students attended the opening of the movie Wonder. The Columbus Metropolitan Library printed library cards for all of our students. We are also thankful for the ongoing support of our PTO, students, parents, and staff for all they do each day to grow our students and make Glendening a strong community.

I wish all of you a safe, healthy, and happy winter break!

Thanks for checking out our newsletter and remember you can follow us on twitter @glendeningelem and check out our website at  gocruisers.org/glendeningelementary_home.aspx

Donation of New Shoes

On Tuesday, November 21, a number of volunteers from Crossroads Church in Lithopolis visited Glendening to give each of our students a new pair of shoes. Students were so excited by this generous gift, and we are so fortunate that they chose us. The day was filled with smiles, shoe fittings, running faster, and jumping higher. Thank you to the wonderful volunteers who made our day and

put a little extra spring in our students' steps!  Please visit our photo gallery to see the excitement of the day.

5th Grade Students Choose Kindness

The fifth grade students at Glendening Elementary recently completed a book study on the novel, Wonder by R.J. Palacio.  During this study, the students focused on learning and practicing the state standards of comparing/contrasting story elements, comparing/contrasting point of view and perspective, analyzing the text to identify theme, summarizing, and quoting the text for evidence.  The students completed an activity where they were asked to compare/contrast two characters in the book.  Prior to completing their individual assignment on the comparison, we modeled the correct format for the writing piece.  They then had to search for evidence and went through the writing process to complete their own. In class, we spent a lot of our teaching time participating in thoughtful discussions about the story line with our students.

The students interest and passion for the book made us realize that they needed to see the movie as a culminating activity.  We set forth to ask for donations from our own friends and family members, along with the staff at Glendening.  These people began to share with their own friends and the donations started to pour in. By the end of the week, we had our field trip fully funded.  With our generous donations, we were able to purchase not only a movie ticket for each child, but a snack pack, a "Choose Kind" t-shirt and bracelet, and a pizza lunch.

The kindness showed to this project and our students brought us to tears on multiple occasions.  The students were very appreciative and thankful for this WONDERful opportunity.

Columbus Metropolitan Library Cards

All Glendening students were recently  issued a library card if they did not already have an active card. The library card can be used at any Columbus Metropolitan Library. The library  provides a number of programs for  students. Some of the programs include; Ready for K Class, Reading Buddies, Homework Help, and Afterschool Snack.

The library also offers an online resources called Hoopla. Hoopla allows you to borrow movies, music, audiobooks, ebooks, comics and TV shows to enjoy on your computer, tablet, or phone - and even your TV! With no waiting, titles can be streamed immediately, or downloaded to phones or tablets for offline enjoyment later. The library has hundreds of thousands of titles to choose from, with more being added daily. Hoopla is like having your public library at your fingertips. Anytime. Anywhere. To log into Hoopla use your students' library card account number for the username and 1234 for the password.

If your child needs a library card please visit your nearest Columbus Metropolitan Library or let your teacher know.

Honor Roll: Art and Music

Art and Music grades are now factored into Glendening's Honor Roll for 3rd through 5th grades. The arts are an important part of learning so these classes should be taken seriously. There have been a number of changes in state mandated standards over the years to ensure daily instruction is rigorous in all K-12th grade classes. Art and Music classes are no exception.

Growth Mindset Quote

"If it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you."

Here at Glendening we feel it is important to have a growth mindset. We will share inspirational quotes to keep us focused on reaching higher levels of achievement.

What is a growth mindset? "In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work-brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment," Carol Dweck.
