A Tribute to the Class of 2020

This class of 13 students will be furthering their education at 12 different institutions in 10 different states from the east coast to the west coast and in-between. They range from large public universities like The University of California- Davis, to small private universities like Lawrence University, to Ivy League colleges like Dartmouth, to specialty programs like the National Personal Training Institute. 85% will be attending school outside of Illinois. 40 universities offered admission to the class and 77% of the seniors received admission acceptance to a top choice college. It’s quite incredible the diversity that exists in this small but mighty Class of 2020. And they are each carving out their path that is uniquely theirs- this is the power of the opportunity they have had to develop and grow as individuals these past four years in the Upper School. What an incredible group of Seniors we had this year and what a phenomenal finish! They truly deserve a large round of virtual applause to acknowledge all of their accomplishments. The class was represented by an amazing young woman whom they voted to be the class speaker at graduation, Madeline Daniel. Here is Madeline's speech reflecting on the Roycemore Class of 2020 and all that they endured together.
"I was born just a few days before the twin towers fell. When they fell, time stood still. The US, and arguably the world, entered a new era of history. My classmates and I were all born within just a few months of this turning point. We entered childhood during an era shift, and now, as we, quote on quote, “exit” childhood, we are in the midst of another. Before all of this happened I was so bored with the normal, mundane school life. My senioritis was through the roof, and I was hoping all the time for a break. And then COVID19 appeared. At first, it was just a whisper in the news. It felt so far away..."

There were 13 graduates in our 8th Grade Class who, despite the unforeseen challenges, rose to the occasion and ended the year on a high note! We are so proud of them all. Please enjoy these speeches from two members who were voted by their peers to be the 8th Grade Class Speakers.

Elinor Rice Fuchs Teacher Of The Year:
Julie Herrick
|
|
The Elinor Rice Fuchs Distinguished Teacher of the Year for 2020 is awarded to Julie Herrick. Mrs. Herrick has a special ability to connect with students and help them discover strengths that they may not even know they have. Her warm care, and calm, steady and expert guidance provides the kind of individual support that Roycemore is known for. Julie is deeply invested in each child. Students can often be found in her classroom outside of class time to finish working on a project because they want to get it right. She is attuned to the needs and interests of her students and it is clear how much she cares for each individual. Congratulations Mrs. Herrick!

Distinguished Alumna Commencement Speech
|
|
Olga Guardia de Smoak was awarded the honor of being named Roycmore's Distinguished Alumna for 2020. Unfortunately, Ms. Guardia de Smoak was not able to join the virtual ceremony last week. Instead, Graduating Senior, Cara M., was asked to delivery Olga's words to the Roycemore Community and did so honorably.

“Both my sister and I studied at Roycemore and loved it. We were beautifully prepared for college. What really was so helpful to me personally was that the individualized schedule was arranged so that I could equally pursue my ballet and academic studies. The extraordinary care and attention of the teachers made it a fantastic experience.”

We are so proud of all the students who contributed to the Roycemore Literary Magazine for 2020. We had hundreds of submissions crossing all divisions and a few faculty too! Congratulations to Juniors Ela C. and Grace L. for spearheading the effort and to their staff including Junior Chyna C., Sophomore Nino M., Freshman Tomas P. and 8th grader Faelyn M.

Virtual Summer Camps Offerings

We are excited to offer a variety of virtual camps and courses this summer in addition to our longstanding Camp Griffin offerings (which now will start June 26th) and our enrichment theme-based Inspiration Factory offerings (starting in July). We have virtual options for 2nd Graders through Upper School and camps range from 1 week to 8 weeks.

event with Alumnus Geoff Mark has been rescheduled for June 27th at 5:00pm.
We are proud to continue Griffin Greats, our speaker series highlighting Roycemore alumni and their amazing talents. Please join us for an exclusive interview with Geoffrey Mark, Distinguished Alumnus and Visual Special Effects Master! He has worked in cartoons and video games in addition to visual effects in major movie productions.

Summer Book Check-Out Program
|
|
We have had many families express interest in continuing to check out books over the summer that our Roycemore Librarian, Ms. Hilda, has arranged to continue her drive through pick program. She will be on campus Friday, June 12 from 12-2pm. You can access the Roycemore School

We are proud to continue our support for the Evanston YWCA's annual Race Against Hate. This longstanding tradition in Evanston honors the legacy of Ricky Byrdsong, who was murdered by a white supremacist in Skokie while walking with his children. For the past 20 years, the Evanston YWCA has put on the Race Against Hate to honor his memory and bring awareness to antiracist causes. Roycemore has been a regular sponsor for this event for the past many years, and has formed a team to run together during the race in the past. Although we will not be able to gather in person for the race this year, there are still ways that our Roycemore community can support the race.
