Greetings clients and friends—
Oh my, I can’t believe summer is winding down already! Granted, in the Northwest we are going to have another month of beautiful weather before fall truly sets in; I always love the warm September days and crisp nights. And I’m
almost ready to settle into a structured schedule again (school, practice, rehearsals, meetings, etc.) after a summer of impromptu plans and last-minute changes.
Almost…

Being in the travel business means I often get to indulge in my passion for visiting new places, connecting with new cultures, trying new food, experiencing new things.
The catch is that my family wants to go back to a place where we have had a great time so that we can do the things we liked again, and maybe experience some new things that we didn’t have time to try.
My challenge is: how do I introduce them to new place so they want to go back and travel deeper?

One way I have found to get an overview of a place is to take a cruise thru the region. Some examples include:
- Mediterranean cruise, stopping in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal;
- Western Caribbean cruise: stopping in Honduras, Mexico, Grand Cayman;
- Eastern Caribbean cruise: Bahamas, St. Thomas, St Maarten, Turks & Caicos;
- Northern Europe: England, Belgium, Denmark, Norway;
- Asia: Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam
In each of these examples, a traveler is visiting 3-4 distinct cultures in the space of about a week. (With only having to unpack once, yay!)

As you are traveling, and later when you are sharing your stories with family and friends, ask yourself: what place really resonated with me? What did I find intriguing? What cuisine do I want to revisit? Where were the people friendly and engaging?
If one of the ports stands out to you as truly fascinating THERE, my friends, is a place I encourage you to return to and do a land-based tour and really experience the locale and culture. A day in port is enough to give you a taste, the next step is go back for several days or a week and find your new favorite coffee shop, chat with local craftspeople, and break in those new walking shoes.
