MESSAGE FROM BARRY LANTEIGNE, DCI PRESIDENT
The Board of Directors and myself would like to thank our CIGBA/DCI Members, Supplier Partners, and Industry Partners for your ongoing and continued support. It continues to be an interesting and challenging 2020 with the Covid-19 Pandemic, however, it has absolutely been amazing to see our members interacting with one another sharing ideas and supporting each other through this unprecedented time!

We at CIGBA/DCI have been working with our members and supplier partners as required to try and provide any necessary products and resources to get through the pandemic. To all front-line workers, industry folks supplying the demand in the grocery stores, and community heroes who have continued to work so diligently throughout this pandemic, I would like to say thank You … and that we appreciate all that you do!

As you may be aware, the CIGBA/DCI Annual Business Summit was postponed in June and we have secured the date of October 26, 2020 to celebrate with our members and partners at our Annual Gala Dinner. Unfortunately, we are currently not promoting this event as we are continuously monitoring social distancing measures and will be making a final decision as of August 1, 2020 if we will be proceeding with the dinner!

The Annual CIGBA/CFIG Charity Golf Classic which was to be held at Crosswinds Golf and Country Club in Burlington, on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 has also been cancelled for the 2020 year and we have confirmed a new date for next year, which will be Wednesday, September 22, 2021 .  Please mark this in your calendar as we look forward to hosting this tournament again next year!

We are looking at a new initiative to start in September 2020, where we are going to be highlighting our supplier partners on a monthly basis. The goal of this program is to be featuring partners on a rotational basis, as well as provide an opportunity to all partners who may not have had the chance in the past to connect with DCI in this way. Having said that, those that want to participate consistently on a monthly basis, are encouraged to contact me to discuss further! The more opportunities that we can provide our members, the better the program will be for all! This will be done on a first come, first served basis. This will give a minimum of 10 partners/month the opportunity to participate in offering our members opportunity buys and/or use this to highlight or communicate new product launches or innovations.

As always, I am here to support our members and supplier partners so please reach out to me as required and I will be more than happy to help you in any way possible! I can be reached at 905-681-3933 x101 or through email at barry@distributioncanada.ca .

RETAILERS, STAY CONNECTED WITH DCI!
We at DCI understand that keeping up with emails and announcements can be difficult at times due to busy stores and peak seasons. Below is a breakdown to understand where you can access DCI related content and news.
Email Campaigns
Breaking news, industry announcements, new agreements and power buy/opportunity buys are always sent out through email. This allows us to target our communication by location, type of store, and relevancy as well as give us detailed reporting on who is opening the announcements, which links they have clicked on and where to allocate our efforts for outreach if members haven't opened up these communications.

We strongly encourage you to dedicate a member of your management team to be your communications liaison for your company, especially for those owners who tend to be super busy and don't check their emails daily. You could be missing incredible buying opportunities, programs, or helpful industry tips to better the success of your company.

Please email Matthew Brown to see which members of your company currently receive our communications (we segment by multiple lists, so be sure touch base with Matthew if you aren't aware as to who is receiving which communications).
Social Media
Only have a couple of minutes? Check out the DCI Social media pages on Facebook , Twitter and LinkedIn . Major public announcements are always posted on our social media and you can often find other industry bits of information shared on our pages.
DCI Intranet Portal
By logging into the portal, you will get access to your company's rebate reports. As well, any important announcements regarding changes in agreements will also be posted internally on the portal.

What else does the portal provide?
  • new supplier partner agreements
  • new programs and promotions
  • revised supplier partner agreements and rebate scales
  • your member reports
  • the DCI by-laws
  • the CIGBA by-laws
  • summary of volume rebates
  • AGM information

If you don't have login credentials to access the Intranet Portal, click here to email Michele at DCI.

Once you've checked the portal for information and still don't see what you are looking for, please email or call the DCI office with your inquiry.

Please note: the DCI Intranet Portal is for Retailers only .

FROM OUR SUPPLIER PARTNERS
The Overnight Shift to Online Groceries
It started on March 12th. Almost overnight the volume of orders being handled by retailers on our platform jumped significantly. We are seeing retailers having between two to ten times the volume in online orders than what they were doing a few days earlier.

The surge in online grocery orders in something we could never have expected. The average annual growth rate across the retailers on our platform has on average been 15%. Mighty Oaks has been providing online grocery solutions since 2002, in those 18 years we have never seen anything like this.

Our response
Our NOC team continually monitors system loads. We were able to quickly increase compute infrastructure to handle the volume ensuring systems continue to work. Online grocery demand and capacity requirements are changing rapidly. Then a day or two came the wave of requests from retailers included adjusting time slots limits, bringing on-line new stores, and adjusting delivery zones.  It was an amazing increase in transaction volumes with better levels of customer services.

Why are Retailers Going Online?
For the last year or two, the move to online groceries was often driven by a desire to follow the customer as their needs and behaviour change, in other cases it was fear of what Amazon and others represented. These past two weeks have been completely different.  It has been a sense of community and a desire to respond to the specific needs of the local community.
Groceries and the food supply chain are now considered an essential service. In times such as these, online ordering is the most effective and safest way to address this need.

The Future
Many of the grocery retailers, food processors and producers on our platform are essential services to their communities and they view us as an essential service. We agree. We have prioritised helping the pre-existing retailers on our platform focus on meeting the needs of their community. However, we are now doing more, we are now focused on bringing on board new retailers at an accelerated pace. We’re here to help.

The Sobeys Wholesale Five & Drive Week 45 Promotion ran from February 28th - March 12, 2020. To qualify, retailers earned 1 entry into the draw for every 5 cases that they purchased on products within the special catalog. Great promotion and congratulations to Sharpe's Food Market for winning!
"We Will Feed You" - Four Words of A Community Hero
After catching a man steal food from his grocery store, Mike Williamson, the owner of Central Fresh Market decided to give him more food instead!

“You could tell he was just trying to feed himself,” Williamson said. “We always prefer people to come in and ask for help rather than steal, but when you catch people stealing just to eat it’s a much different story.”

Central Fresh Market recognizes the importance of highlighting food insecurity in the community. They make regular food bank donations and is noticing an increase in demand. They hope to raise awareness in their community and encourage others to help those that need in the community.

Well done Mike and Central Fresh Market!

Congratulations to Cousin's Market on their brand new Nobleton, ON and Mississauga ON locations!

DCI would like to congratulate you on your company expansion!
Uber Groceries ... Will It be a 5 Star Experience?

"Uber Technologies Inc. is getting into the grocery delivery business and is using some Canadian cities to help it launch the venture.

The San Francisco-based tech giant said Tuesday that users in Montreal and Toronto can now order groceries through its Uber and Uber Eats apps.

'They'll be able to place orders from local merchants and receive them in as little as one to two hours.'"
