CKA Applauds NBC’s Decision to Support Diversity and Denounce Anti-Asian Racism
Washington, DC - Council of Korean Americans (CKA) supports NBC’s decision to withdraw comedian Shane Gillis from the new season lineup of Saturday Night Live (SNL).
On September 12, 2019, NBC announced the addition of three new cast members for Saturday Night Live’s 45th season, including Bowen Yang, the first Asian American full-time comedian cast member since Fred Armisen and Rob Schneider. However, the media’s spotlight soon shifted to fellow castmate Shane Gillis, who was recently discovered to have made brash and overtly racist statements describing Chinese Americans in his comedic material and his 2018 podcast. CKA believes that such anti-Asian sentiments are not only offensive to Chinese Americans but also harmful to the Asian American community as a whole.
CKA, along with other Asian American civic organizations, applauds NBC executives for maintaining an important standard of appropriateness and the corporation’s endeavor to diversify the face of entertainment with the recent promotion of Bowen Yang. We look forward to another successful season as SNL enters its 45th season of broadcast with new diverse faces.
