ALONG THE RIVER WITH FOLAR

Everyone welcome for a FREE canoe ride on the amazing Appomattox River!
Wednesday, Oct. 9th, 4 - 6:30pm
at Hopewell City Park and Riverwalk
For the seventh year more than 300 students from elementary schools in Hopewell will experience learning on the Appomattox River. CANOEMOBILE is a roving fleet of six 24 foot long travels across America to bring environmental outdoor learning experiences to urban youth.
The two day outreach event on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 8th & 9th, 2019 in Hopewell is provided by Wilderness Inquiry, a non-profit outdoor recreation and education organization from and sponsored by the National Parks Conservation Association in coordination with FOLAR.
This year's free community program is Wednesday, October 9th from 4 - 6:30PM at Hopewell City Park, 205 Appomattox St, Hopewell, VA 23860 on the beautiful Appomattox River. See the new Riverwalk from the waterside!

 Public Input Sought on Ashland to Petersburg Trail Study

VDOT is seeking public input on the proposed Ashland to Petersburg Trail corridor which is expected to intersect with the planned Appomattox River Trail.

An Amazing Day on the River
Water enthusiasts from around the region gathered to make the 12TH Annual FOLAR Paddle-or-Battle an amazing river event according to participants and volunteers. The Hopewell Marina was buzzing with activity and excitement with 80 paddlers putting boats in the water to benefit FOLAR's mission to conserve and protect the Appomattox River for all to enjoy. And enjoy they did! Thanks to the help of more than two dozen hard working FOLAR volunteers and event partners, the Hopewell Recreation and Parks Department, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Prince George County Police Marine Division.

800 Volunteers Participated in
20TH James River Regional Clean-up
The annual event held every September is organized by the
James River Advisory Council and its many partners, including nonprofit organizations, friends groups, businesses, local governments, state agencies and individuals. FOLAR hosted two sites - Petersburg Patton Park and Hopewell Marina which had 75 volunteers who were part of the nearly 800 who came out regionally to 17 sites to remove 823 bags of trash and recyclables!

FOLAR Welcomes Two New Board Members
Betty Estes, is a representative from Colonial Heights. Betty has been a Colonial Heights resident for 25+ years. She has practiced as a licensed Central Virginia Realtor for 18 years, currently as Broker/Owner of Rockwater Realty. Betty has experience in business management, accounting, and legislative affairs. She served on Colonial Heights Citizens' Comprehensive Plan Committee, Stormwater Committee, National Night Out Host, and currently, the Architectural Review Board. Betty is passionate about land, water, nature conservation and enjoyment, leisure bicycling on trails, travel and her amazing Grandsons.
Ed Pappas, is the Hopewell City appointee. Ed is a retiree from DuPont Teijin Films, and earned his certification as a Virginia Master Naturalist in 2015. He enjoys nature and the outdoors, including primitive camping & hiking in which he is usually accompanied by his dog. Ed has helped with FOLAR clean-ups for many years. He fills the seat previously held by Johnny Parton and comes to us with a recommendation by one of our founders, Wayne Walton.Ed is especially fortunate to live right along the Appomattox River Trail in Hopewell!
