Dear Marquette Families,
Our school year has been off to a successful and busy start this school year. I’m proud of all the hard work of students and staff.
One of the goals of our School Improvement Plan is to build positive relationships among students. Our decision to focus on this goal was based on input from students, families, and staff. We will build empathy and conflict resolution skills through classroom instruction and schoolwide reinforcements throughout the school year. We want students to become independent with these skills, so they can use them in all settings and beyond school.
One conflict resolution strategy we will be teaching is the “STEP” problem solving process. This is a part of the social emotional learning curriculum we use in MMD.
Here are the steps students will be learning:
S- Say the problem without blame.
T-Think of safe and respectful solutions.
E- Explore consequences (What would happen if…?)
P- Pick the best solution and make a plan.
I also want to appreciate the PTG for helping us purchase some additional resources. These resources focus on teaching students to recognize, report, and refuse bullying and other harmful interactions. We look forward to integrating them into this focus.

Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) and Madison School Community Recreation (MSCR) are using an automated volunteer management program called

Good attendance contributes to students doing well in school and eventually in the workplace. By middle and high school, attendance is even more predictive of successful graduation. Each absence represents a preventable lost opportunity to learn in the classroom.

If your child is going to be absent or late for school, please call the school attendance safe arrival phone line at 204-3233 or fill out the form below by 8:00 in the morning.
You must contact the school every day that your child will not be in school. Any unreported absences are considered unexcused
.
If students need to leave early, for an appointment or other reasons, you should notify the office and teacher ahead of time. When you come and pick up your student, we ask that you come into the office to sign them out. The office staff will then notify your child's teacher to send the student to the office for dismissal.
If your child will be absent for a vacation or trip, a "Request for Pre-Approved Planned Absence" form must be completed and approved by your school's principal before the scheduled absence.
When you make school attendance a priority, you help your child get better grades, develop healthy life habits, avoid dangerous behavior and have a better chance of graduating from high school.
Students who attend school regularly also feel more connected to their community, develop important social skills and friendships, and are significantly more likely to graduate from high school, setting them up for a strong future.
As a parent, you can prepare your child for a lifetime of success by making regular school attendance a priority. By figuring out the reasons for your child's absences-whether they're physical or emotional-and taking advantage of support services, you can help set your child on the path to success!

Please join us for Open House on Tuesday, October 15, 2019. This is your opportunity to visit your child's classroom, meet your student's specials teachers ands see other areas of the building. Teachers will be available from 5:45-6:45 in their classrooms.

The Marquette Mile is approaching quickly!
|
|
The Marquette Mile is set for Friday, October 18 at 1:20 PM. Students, staff, parents and community members will run/walk for approximately a mile to raise money to support various field trips, guest speakers, and other special events throughout the year and to celebrate wellness. T-shirt orders are finished but we are still accepting monetary support to make this fundraiser a success. If you would like to make a donation, please bring it to the Marquette office. It's a great cause and a celebratory event so please join our students and staff.

for holding a supply drive and donating an abundance of supplies for our student's use. Thank you for being so generous and for helping to get our school year off to a great start.

We have a had a great start to the year. Our third graders looked at Van Gogh's classic "Sunflowers" and then each produced their own sunflower using oil pastels. We put them together to form one GIANT bouquet for each class. Looks great! Fourth graders, are already on their 3rd project after painting Kandinsky inspired circles and drawing Picasso inspired roosters with oil pastels. Ask your child if they remember the BIG word we use for painting with just one color (monochromatic). Stay tuned for what they are creating! Our fifth graders have been busy drawing circles and lines to create a vision for the eyes. We are using color, shape and lines to create movement, pattern and contrast. They are turning out amazing!

It's been a fun and busy month in music class, and I'm loving the time with your children. They have so much energy, creativity, and light; I'm certain we will have a wild and wonderful year together!
Instruments
All grades have been honing their listening and percussion skills with a variety of drumming games (Statue Drum, Where's Ladybug?, and Rumble Drum are some of our favorites!). We spent a little time on keyboards, and students will continue independent work throughout the year. Everyone will learn to play at least 2 new songs!
Singing
A comical song titled "Old Lunch Room" had us reviewing the cafeteria rules, rapping and rhyming, and making school procedures a bit more enjoyable. It's a parody of "Old Town Road," and is guaranteed to be stuck in your brain!
Musician of the Month
Michael Franti inspired us with his themes of love, peace, community, compassion, and hope. Also, he's been barefoot for over 19 years, which both puzzled and amazed us. One of his albums is titled "Everyone Deserves Music," and he lives his life with a spirit of generosity and kindness toward all beings. Check out some of his music
What's Next?
We will play ukulele, expand our vocal ranges by singing new and different styles of music, and learn about another musician. Please come visit if you'd like to share a musical talent with our class!

We’re having a great start to the school year! We’re learning and reviewing the library expectations and routines. All the classes have checked out books and visited our makerspace, the CoLaboratory (CoLab for short), to explore and try awesome STEM activities. Next up we’ll spend the month of October learning about Digital Citizenship.

- Bring in books you want to keep longer to be renewed for another 2 weeks.
- If you have any overdue books, you can’t check out more until those come back.
- 3rd grade checks out 3 books at a time.

Marquette Community Read: Garvey’s Choice

Starting in October, our school will be kicking off our 2nd Community Read!. All classes at Marquette will be hearing
Garvey’s Choice
by Nikki Grimes as a read-aloud, and throughout the month students and families will be invited to interact with the story in various ways.
|
|
Book Summary:
Garvey's father has always wanted Garvey to be athletic, but Garvey is interested in astronomy, science fiction, reading—anything but sports. Garvey is kind, funny, smart, a loyal friend, and he is also overweight, teased by bullies, and lonely. When his only friend encourages him to join the school chorus, Garvey's life changes. This emotionally resonant novel in verse by award-winning author Nikki Grimes celebrates choosing to be true to yourself.

Positive Behavior Support
|
|
Some of our Positive Behavior Support Team, led by our very own Michelle Blevins, worked hard over the summer to create some universal lesson plans and activities surrounding our school-wide expectations. We focused on cafeteria, recess (and positive conflict resolution), bathroom and hallway expectations. Each week, we celebrated in our community trios. These trios included one classroom from each grade level. Students were able to share the work they did throughout the week (posters, songs, games or activities). We also gave “shout-outs” to students we noticed followed all the expectations that week. Fun was had by all!

The PTG board would like to thank the Tenney Lapham Neighborhood Association who generously donated $1000 to kick start our Acute Needs Fund! This fund will be used to assist Lapham-Marquette students and families with special acute needs or in times of crisis directly helping our most vulnerable scholars. Any donations made to the PTG through the month of October will be earmarked for the Acute Needs Fund. Thank you for considering a donation, and for all you do to support the PTG and our wonderful schools.
Coming this month! Start your holiday shopping early! Information about the annual REAP fundraiser is in backpacks this week. Celebrate another successful garden season and help prepare the garden for its long winter's nap. The fall garden celebration and workday is scheduled for October 26th. Join us for our next meeting on October 8 at 6pm in the Lapham Auditorium. As always pizza and childcare will be provided. We hope to see you there!
