Yesterday was my 67th birthday and the 19th anniversary of my first day at Forrest Burdette. It was fitting to celebrate that date in church! Looking back at that time in my life causes me to realize all the blessings I would have missed had I not answered the call to come here. I had been serving at Epworth United Methodist Church in Ripley, my hometown, and was enjoying a success with the music ministry there as well as a sought-after private piano studio. The people there were appreciative and loving, and I felt the same way about them. However, as it has been with every job I've ever had, the position came looking for me. I must admit it felt like a leap of faith to move here for a church position as music positions are not usually known for longevity except in exceptional cases.
Because I answered this call I have come into contact with countless wonderful people both here in the valley and in Charleston and Huntington. I have also had wonderful experiences in two other churches in these past nineteen years. I have been privileged to give two solo concerts on the Harrah Symphonic Organ as well as performing two piano concerts jointly with well-known organists. My growth, both as a person and a musician, have blossomed as a result of my decision to follow God here.
When I came here in 1999 I was in a struggling marriage which eventually failed. It was an interesting time of birth and death. Although I presumed I would never marry again, I married a Forrest Burdette girl! Donna was on staff when I started here, but soon after she resigned and for a while attended church elsewhere. God led her back to Forrest Burdette, and in the fall of 2002 she indicated a desire to play in the church orchestra. Before I knew it we were making music together in the orchestra and fell in love. We were privileged to do two mission trips to Russia with Volunteers in Mission and as a result decided to adopt. Today we have a beautiful son, Christian, who will be twelve this Friday. We brought him home from his native Guatemala to the the U. S. when he was five months old.
So maybe yesterday was really Thanksgiving Day for me!
