RSDM Receives $11.7 Million To Research Opioid Alternatives

RSDM was awarded an $11.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health  (NIH) for research on the combination of ibuprofen and acetaminophen as an alternative to opioids.  Although smaller, shorter-term studies indicate that combining the two medications can treat acute pain as effectively as opioids, the RSDM study, led by Dean Cecile A.Feldman, would involve 1,800 subjects. According to Feldman, dental clinics are an ideal setting for opioid research because dentists and oral surgeons prescribe the drugs at higher rates than many other medical practitioners. Dental Mission Leaves Lasting Imprint

Tiffany Yau holds a thank-you gift from a pediatric patient in the Domnican Republic.
RSDM's global missions are funded by donors' generous gifts, which are doubled and tripled in 2019. Their impact on student doctors, like Tiffany Yau, is profound. She is one of many dedicated and compassionate students you can support. Give here.

Tiffany Yau will never forget the 14-year-old patient whose front teeth were fractured by physical abuse. They met during RSDM's annual dental mission to the Dominican village of La Romana. "Most of the time, these types of injuries are sports-related but hers happened when she had an object thrown at her face,'' Yau recalls. "I really wanted to do right by her and give her a smile that would help erase that.''  LEARN MORE

The Fauchard Dental Society of New Jersey has had a long-standing bond with RSDM students. It helped fund preclinical laboratories, held pizza parties at the school and invited students to sit in on board meetings. This year, it deepened its connection by endowing a student scholarship. " We thought that by far, providing scholarship funds for a student in their third year has a greater impact than anything else we could do,'' explained Dr. Tom Rossi, a member of the Class of '77 and past president of the society.   LEARN MORE

Consider Creating Your Own Named Scholarship

RSDM students relax in the campus courtyard.

We're down to the wire for reaching the $1 million Chancellor's Scholarship Challenge goal and have passed the $700,000 mark. Start a Scholarship in Your Name

Since the scholarship challenge began this year, we have created 14 new RSDM endowed scholarships. Most donors are pledging $5,000 a year for 5 years. If you ever thought you'd like to have a named-endowed scholarship, now is the time to discuss it.  In fact, the most recent dental scholarship was created by a Class of 2014 graduate, and his donation will be matched with an additional $50,000. Contact Joan Liljegren via email or at 973-972-0307 to learn more before the match money runs out.

Alumnus Writes Thriller About Facial Recognition Technology

Dr. Philip Wolfson
Dr. Philip Wolfson, Class of '74, combined his background in dentistry and his fascination with facial recognition technology to produce "Faces Tell All,'' a spy thriller published this summer. "The main premise is that our faces give us away - our identities, our physical and psychological fitness, our attitudes and intentions - and this revelatory power can now be enhanced through computer based scanning cameras,'' says Wolfson. Find out more about the inspiration for his book.  LEARN MORE

Become a Mentor

Alumni are invited to mentor students as part of RSDM's Care to Share program -- a no-cost way to support the next generation of dentists. There are many levels of participation, including welcoming recent graduates to spend a day at your practice, participate in an externship, or just meet for coffee to offer tips and advice. If you are ten years or more out of dental school and would like to mentor, or a recent graduate who would like to be paired with a mentor, let us know. Ideas or questions? Contact Laura Teti, Coordinator of Alumni Engagement and Donor Relations at [email protected]
