CONTENTMENT & CONFLICT

As I read the Bible, I write favorite verses in the front, verses I try to embrace and live by. I would like to share two that currently are creating both peace and conflict in me.

Philippians 4:11 -12
I have learned how to be content in any circumstance. I know the experience of being in need and of having more than enough; I have learned the secret to being content in any and every circumstance.

Micah 6:8
and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

I will confess, I am content, and even happy, to continue this quarantine for a while. I LOVE many aspects of it—being able to do so many things about which I have thought, “When I get time, I am going to . . . “ Well, now I have time and I am doing most of them. I will also admit that I truly enjoy spending time with my husband that isn’t interrupted by my outside responsibilities-- choices I have made and activities I enjoy, but nevertheless, involving places I have to go and time that I have to spend that I sometimes feel interferes with my “me-time.” Do I still have outside responsibilities? Do I miss my children, grandchildren, church family, and other friends? Most definitely, and while Zoom, live-streaming, emails, FaceTime and the telephone have allowed me to stay connected, I do look forward to person-to-person connections and am v-e-r-y slowly trying to incorporate those back into my life. At the same time, I realize that I am in a position to feel comfortable under quarantine, I have more than enough—I am retired, I have no children at home whose education I need to consider, I am financially stable, I live with a very caring person. So while I know it is selfish of me to be so content with this extended “gift of time,” guilt has not plagued me. And because I have also experienced being in need (financially and socially), I do want to find ways to help and be connected to the larger community. I have volunteered weekly at Roadrunner Food Bank, written notes to, emailed or called people to let them know I care about them. I am attempting to be a kinder, more patient person, more willing to accept people for who they are and not so much who I wish they would be.

However, this week, two things have happened to make me realize that while these steps are important; they are still self-centered, they only address part of these scriptures and they are not enough. First, I agreed to write a brief article about conditions on the Navajo Nation for my professional organization. My local chapter and our state organization support the Navajo Water Project, both financially and with food, water, blankets and other necessities. You probably know that the Navajo Nation is one of the highest hit areas per capita with Covid-19. Most of these people have no running water, no electricity and very limited access to what you and I would consider necessities. The second event was the death of George Floyd, the protests that have resulted, and unfortunately the violence to which a few people have resorted, and which I fear takes the conversation away from what the issues really are. These two things have pointed out to me again that not all people in this country, and indeed in the world, have the luxury I do to be so easily content with their circumstances, to experience a just and kind society. I also realize that we continue to have this same conversation over and over. Yes, I certainly must be content in my own circumstances, express kindness to friends, family and strangers and do what I can to improve the circumstances of those with so much less. These are the easy changes, my true growth will be when I find ways to go beyond my comfort zone, when I more fully do justice and walk humbly with my God. Oh, and that brings to mind a third scripture, which sounds so good, but which can be so difficult for me to follow-- Matthew 25: 40, And the king will answer, “I tell you this: anything you did for one of my brothers here, however humble, you did for me.”

Gracious and loving God, thank you for my many blessings and forgive me when I neglect any opportunity to help others experience your blessings. Guide me to find a “new normal” that better witnesses to these scriptures and is more in tune with the example of how to live that I see in Jesus the Christ, in whose name I pray.

MOUNTAIN CATHEDRALS
Saturday, June 20
7:30 am
Mountain Cathedrals is headed out June 20 at 7:30 am from St Johns east parking lot. We will travel to a trail at the far corner of the Manzanita Mountains, called David Canyon, just south of I-40, less than 25 miles from St John’s. NOTE: due to church closure the bathrooms will not be open in our building before or after the hike. We will plan to stop on the way to the trail. We will also take individual cars, so no ride shares will be offered.

This hike of approximately 5 miles, includes ponderosa forest and magnificent views of the Manzano Mountains, making it feel like you’re in a remote wilderness. There are Gambel and wavy-leaf oak, as well as open meadows, wild flowers, lots of woodpeckers, hawks, and other birds. You may want to bring binoculars!

You will need to bring water and snacks or a light lunch for yourself. Make sure you have sunscreen and a hat. This is a moderate hike with an elevation gain of about 500 feet, that is gently sloped. We plan to return to the church between 1-1:30 pm. As with all of our hikes there will be time for reflection on scripture and we will celebrate communion with individual cups and wafers. As we gather at the church we ask you to wear masks. When we arrive at the trailhead, we will space out to at least 6 feet apart as individuals or family units. Masks will not be required on the hike unless you would like to use them.

THE PRACTICE OF PRESENCE
Fridays from 9:30 - 10:00 am
Susan Brumbaugh, staff mental health counselor at St. John's is offering a free (hopefully weekly) gathering to practice mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness is about developing the ability to be present in the moment with non-judgmental awareness. Formal meditation can build neural pathways that help us stay anchored during emotional storms and help us build resilience. Meeting together virtually gives us an opportunity to have company on the journey. Each 30-minute session begins with a brief welcome, a description of the focus (e.g., breath, body, senses, emotions, thoughts), a 15-20 minute guided practice, and an opportunity to debrief and share experiences. Anyone is welcome--no experience is necessary. If you want to learn more prior to starting, the sessions will be similar to ones she leads and records for  YouTube Each session will be hosted on Zoom.  HERE is the zoom link. Please contact Susan Brumbaugh, counselor@stjohns-abq.org, or 505-506-6716, if you have questions.

ST. JOHN'S EMAIL BIBLE STUDY: Theology in Popular Music - Mostly the Good
Last year’s study, “The Songs of Summer” seemed to be a hit, so we’re going to do it again. This summer we’ll listen to some popular music that sings about prayer and healing, some international music, some bluegrass and country, some great young singers who are the future of the Church, and some show tunes.  Download the study guide, or sign up for daily study tips by email by writing or calling Regina Hunter at drhunter@nmia.com or 294-2877.

VIRTUAL TAI CHI WITH KATHY
JUNE SPECIAL OFFERING: LOCKER #505
This month we at St John's have the opportunity to help the APS clothing bank called Locker #505. It provides clothing for students that they feel good about wearing, so they can concentrate on their school work and not worry about how they look. If we remember back to our school days (I know- a long time ago for many of us!), I am sure we can remember how important feeling good about our appearance was! With schools not in session since March, donations of lightly used clothing and money are down. New coronavirus procedures are in place so that students can still be served. Please give generously.
ST. JOHN'S FACILITY IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
In accordance with the New Mexico Department of Health order, our facility will be closed until further notice. A re-open date is to be determined! We will keep you apprised as things develop.

Your St. John's pastors and staff are still very much on the job, and are available to you during this time. Please reach out to us if we can help you in any way!
