The Healing Practice of Letting Go

This Sunday will fall during the Jewish Days of Awe, the period between Rosh Hashanah (the world's birthday) and Yom Kippur (the day of repentance) -- the most sacred time of the Jewish year. We will explore the spiritual healing that can be found in asking forgiveness and in letting go, two practices that are central to this season in Jewish spirituality.

will hear the story of Small Fry, a fish who learns about the world outside of the pond.
*Roots and Wings
(9:15am K+, 11:15am K-2) enjoys the tale of Stellaluna the bat who encounters many challenges as she joins a family of birds.
Curiosity Club
(11:15am 3-5th Grade) will delve into the complexities around forgiveness as they hear the story The Forgiveness Garden.
Jedi Academy
(11:15 6th-8th Grade) will discuss the light side and dark side of Star Wars.
High School Youth Group
(9th-12th Grade) will not meet this week, since our Coming of Age group is gathering to make personal altars in the afternoon.

Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education
for 1st & 2nd Grade!

We are pleased to announce that Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education (OWL) is being offered this fall for 1st and 2nd grade children. Please note, your child only has one opportunity to take OWL at these grades; the next time OWL will be offered for these grades is in the 2021-2022 school year. Mandatory Parent Meeting, Wednesday, October 2nd from 6-7:30pm in the Library.

UU Humanist Forum Meets October 6 at 12:45 pm
The UU Humanist Forum will meet this Sunday at 12:45 pm in Room 208, after children's religious education classes end. Elof Carlson will lead a discussion on "The Fallacy of the Meritocracy."

Solar Tour Open House this Sunday, 3 to 5 pm
We are one of 20 Indiana places of worship taking part in solar open houses the first weekend of October, as part of the National Solar Tour. Our open house is this Sunday, October 6, from 3 to 5 pm.

We will tour our solar power system to learn how it works and discuss our energy savings; we cover 86% of our electricity use with our three rooftop photovoltaic arrays.

Fall 2019 Social Justice Grants
Applications Due Next
Sunday, October 13
Each fall, our Social Justice Funds Committee (SJFC) solicits proposals for grants in support of local social justice projects. Projects must be based in Southern Indiana and be consistent with the mission of our church. Priority will be given to applications from (1) Social Justice Task Forces, (2) projects that involve a significant number of the congregation, and (3) applications to seed new projects that will have an enduring benefit. Opening Hearts, Opening Minds
Monday, October 14
6 to 8 pm in Fellowship Hall
Drop in to learn how we can open our hearts, open our minds, and change the world. We will have story baskets, age appropriate resources, and engaged folks on hand to answer questions and support you in learning more about race, racism, refugee and immigrant support. People of all ages are welcome! Newcomers, visitors and friends. We will have childcare available in Room 108 but the event is designed to be family friendly as well!

Assistance for Children in El Paso - Send-Off Gathering Oct. 11
Reverend Bill Breeden, our Minister Emeritus, and Glenda Breeden will travel to El Paso, Texas, October 16 to bring assistance to children at Annunciation House sponsored by the Children's Relief Agency. A send-off gathering will take place on the Courthouse Square next Friday, October 11, from 6-7 p.m. Donations are being accepted to help with this effort. Checks may be made payable to "UU Church" with "El Paso Trip" on the memo line. These checks can be brought or mailed to the church.

Time for a New Paper Church Directory!
We will print our own in-house congregational phone directory soon, aiming to have copies ready to pick up by mid-October. If you have changed your name, phone number, address, or email since October 2018, please send your new information to us at
[email protected]. You may also make corrections on the draft directory, which will be available in the Commons on 10/6 and 10/13.

Drop-in Childcare on Wednesdays, 6-8 pm
We are now offering free drop-in childcare on Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in Room 108.
Parents must remain on site
--on the building grounds or in the building. Please use the Courtyard Entrance. We hope to provide a moment for parents to breathe deeply, have a cup of tea with a friend, or sit in silence before running children to the next event. The Meeting Room will be available for quiet meditation.
