MINISTRY 2020
Last month, we began our focus on ministry taking place at Good Shepherd, and each Sunday we hear about one of those ministries and what they mean to those who are involved.
We believe that God is calling us to change people's lives. We want to see and hear how we are doing that, and how God might be calling each of us to participate.
This Sunday, Heather Merritt will speak about education.
Ministry 2020 will celebrate Commitment Sunday on Sunday, October 20. Next week you will receive information about making your commitment to the work of this church during the next year and beyond, a ministry of love, care and service. This commitment will involve your prayers, your presence, your participation, and your financial support. Following our two services on that Sunday, we will have a celebration dinner. Meat and beverages will be provided. You are asked to bring a side dish, salad, or dessert to share with others. Sign up sheets will be on the bulletin board to indicate your intentions to attend and what food you will bring. Make your plans now to be present for this important event in the life of our church as we initiate our ministry for the next year.

LWR QUILT & KIT SUNDAY
On
Sunday, October 6, we will dedicate the quilts, personal care kits, and school kits being sent to Lutheran World Relief for distribution around the world. Thanks to all who contributed their goods, time, money, and talents.
The LWR Quilters at Good Shepherd work with contributed materials to create the beautiful quilts that are now in the sanctuary. Currently the group includes Marilyn Sheehan, Marci Kuhlman, Deb Green, Sandy Ostermeier, Jacky Shonka, Rachel Kahl, Barbara Hotaling, and Suzanne Barrett. We welcome anyone to join on Tuesday mornings at 9:15, or you can work at home and bring in quilt tops. Please talk to Sue Barrett with questions or for more information (

WELCA & WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY
Tuesday, October 8
10:30 a.m. - fellowship and sharing; 11:00 a.m. - Bible Study
After looking at the creation story of Genesis 1-2:4 in September, we shall look at the other creation story of the Hebrew Bible in Genesis 2:5-24. Why did the ancient Hebrews save both?
What can we learn from the similarities and differences between them? How do they enrich and direct our lives in terms of Care of God's Creation today? All are welcome to join us in the conference room.

SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES
Sunday School classes begin at 9:10 a.m. Child care is available for children five and younger in the nursery.
Elementary School Children
This class begins with music, followed by a lesson using the Godly Play approach.
Confirmation Class
This class is currently learning about the trinity.
DiGG Class (Delving into God's Goodness)
Over the next three Sundays, representatives from various organizations in our community will talk about the services they provide, all of which are forms of accompaniment, one of Good Shepherd's focus areas.

Intersections Class
The Intersections Class welcomes confirmed high school youth and adults to talk about a variety of topics that connect faith and life. On
October 6, the class will continue a study of the book
8 Habits of Love: Overcome Fear and Transform Your Life.
Even if you haven't read the book, you are welcome to join in the discussion.

FALL WELCA GATHERING
2. Fall WELCA Gathering of the Smoky Mountain Conference will take place at Nativity Lutheran in Arden on Saturday, October 5.
Our women are invited to attend this event from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., including lunch. Please register on the bulletin board. There is a $5.00 fee (cash to Barbara Meyer or a check made out to WELCA - Lutheran Church of the Nativity) and a group will carpool from our church. Walk-ins are welcome.
Ellen Dozier will be the guest speaker for the Bible study entitled "Women at the Gate - Who will Save the Children?" She will share information on her work in El Paso, TX, AMMPARO, and the Sanctuary Denomination statement of the ELCA. A free will offering of women's hygiene products for Calvary Food Pantry will be collected.

WORSHIP AT LIVING WATERS
As our congregation at Good Shepherd lives into a relationship with our mission partner, Living Waters Lutheran Church in Cherokee, we want to continue the practice of small groups from LCGS worshiping with the Living Waters congregation on Sunday mornings in Cherokee.
All who have worshiped at Living Waters have been blessed by this experience.

CARE OF CREATION
Save the Trees - Recycle Paper
The forests belong to God and are part of God's holy creation. We can use them, but should not waste and wantonly destroy them. In the commons on the floor near the main entry doors is a box for recycling paper products. Look for the "Care of Creation" logo. Please take a moment after service to drop your bulletin and other papers there to be recycled. Another paper recycling bin is located in the office area near the copier. Please use it for any excess copies, misprints, etc. that you may have. Going forward, we will give members a choice of receiving more information electronically as a way to save paper. Please consider this option, if possible.

CALL PROCESS UPDATE
The LCGS Call Committee continues to interview, request information and contact references in our quest to identify a primary pastoral candidate. Once a primary candidate is identified by the Call Committee, we will submit that pastor's name to Council. If Council agrees with the recommendation after meeting with the candidate, information about the candidate will be shared with the congregation.
A meeting of the congregation will then be called and the voting members of our congregation will vote whether or not to extend a call to this candidate to be our next pastor.
We request your continued prayers, asking for our Lord's guidance in our search.

CONTRIBUTION REPORTS
3rd Quarter Contribution Reports for end of September are now in mail slots for you to pick up. If your mailing address is South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, or other outlying states, your statement was mailed unless we know you are in town. For tax purposes, please note that 2019 End of Year Contribution Reports will all be mailed. Please make sure your mailing address is up-to-date with the church office before December 20. Nora Johnson returned to Spartanburg last week to receive treatment for an infection and for testing.

CROP WALK
Brevard CROP Walk 2019, an event organized through Church World Service that raises money to alleviate hunger locally and worldwide, will be on Sunday, October 13, beginning and ending at Brevard Middle School. Sign-in time is 1:30 p.m., and the walk will begin at 2:00 p.m. The walk itself is a relatively easy three miles around town, with friends from other churches and organizations in our county.
An information table will be set up during coffee hour after the 10:30 worship service for questions, sign-up info, donations, etc. Online donations to "Team LCGS" can also be made

Last year, Brevard had over 150 walkers of all ages, and raised about $15,000, with several thousand of that going to our local Sharing House.
Please join our team, in person or with your contribution -- and also invite your friends to join us in this fun, important event.

PEACE TREE ART PROJECT
October 17, drop-in from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.
Brevard Housing Authority - 133 W. Morgan Street
In response to gun violence, we will gather at the Willow Oak tree at Brevard Housing Authority to create a community art project. Together with our neighbors and community partners, we'll be painting prayer flags and creating sidewalk art that will, respectively, be saved and photographed to feature at the 6th annual "Faces of Freedom" exhibition at the Community Arts Council this January. Please join us, rain or shine, for renewal, healing, creative expression, and peace. Music and refreshments will be provided.
The October 17 art project is the first of three fall 2019/winter 2020 gatherings focused on building our community fabric and creating outlets for healing in response to gun violence. Stay tuned for details about the November 14 labyrinth gathering outside of St. Philip's Episcopal Church and the January 2020 "Faces of Freedom" exhibition at the Community Arts Council.

COMMUNITY SUICIDE AWARENESS TRAINING

If you can use the word 'suicide' in a sentence, you can save a life.
Many people in our community are impacted by suicide. Due to stigma, most suffer alone. We can make our community safer for everyone. This training will provide attendees with basic conversational skills to help
someone considering suicide.
All are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
Speaker Fe Anam Avis is a nationally known figure in suicide prevention work and has trained thousands of people in suicide awareness and intervention skills.
He is the creator of Soul Shop™, an international movement which trains clergy, ministry
leaders, and community members to care for those impacted by suicidal desperation as a regular aspect of their life together.

VISITING PAPAU NEW GUINEA
Here is NC Synod Bishop Tim Smith's monthly reflection.
Over 1400 inhabited islands. Over 800 distinct languages. An independent country since 1975. Over 1,000 anthropological-distinct cultures. 27% Roman Catholic. 21% Lutheran. 11% other Christians. Along with the Amazon basin, home to some of the last remnants of Stone Age civilizations. Six degrees south of the Equator. Stunningly beautiful natural tropical paradise. Abundant natural resources including gold and oil. Crocodiles, snakes, and the Bird of Paradise-both the plant the the actual bird. High crime. Highest domestic violence rate in the world. Deep governmental corruption. Virtually non-existent infrastructure. 80% of inhabitants have no electricity or access to clean water. Unbelievingly hospitable people. Deep vulnerability to development and exploitation by businesses of other nations. These are a few of some of my amateur observations after spending a couple of weeks in Papua New Guinea (PNG) last month.
