Business Students Get Eye-Opening Experience at Peepers
Peepers CEO Alec Sammann Talked Culture, Technology, e-Commerce to Mrs. Meyer's Students

When Oprah Winfrey and Good Morning America sing your praises, you're doing something right.

On Friday, business teacher Colleen Meyer took over two dozen of her students to Peepers, one of Michigan City's trendiest businesses.

The hip eyeware company has been around for over 100 years, but Peepers has experienced immense growth under current CEO Alec Sammann.

Sammann opened his warehouse doors to Marquette students where he shared some of his wisdom with aspiring businessmen and businesswomen.

"The one thing all students took away was how Alec has developed the culture at Peepers," Meyer said.

Just five years after Sammann assumed the role of chief executive officer, Peepers was named amongst The Best Places to Work in Indiana, a distinction they earned again in 2018. Sammann recognizes the importance of a healthy work-life balance, a human resources metric that has become increasingly popular this decade.

He also reinforced other topics such as quality control, technology, communication in a digital world, and e-commerce. Students also took a complete facility tour.

Named one of Inc. 5000's Fastest Growing Companies each of the last six years, Peepers maintains its corporate roots on Highway 12, a stone's throw from the Indiana-Michigan border.

Its Midwestern values have helped Peepers' brand gain notoriety on a national level. The Oprah Magazine included Peepers in its December 2017 issue of "Oprah's Favorite Things". The company's products have also graced the pages of People Magazine, Better Homes & Gardens, and the New Yorker.

Friday served as yet another example of how practice and theory come into focus at Marquette.
