CPC Travels to Guatemala this Fall: Come Along!

Information (and applications) for our 2018 Guatemala trip this fall is now available.
An INFORMATION MEETING about going to Guatemala (with trip details) will be held August 5 in the Fellowship Hall following worship. Please come with your questions.
The trip will be Tuesday, October 16 through October 23.
New this trip: a chance to use hammers and saws!
Yes, we are planning on helping finish the second story of the church by framing and installing doors and windows, and painting. So-all who like the "work" part of a mission trip will have the chance to do so!
Additionally, we will be celebrating the first year of scholarships, holding an information session on the importance of good health practices, and helping the church set up both a Sunday School and a youth group. As Esperanza, we will provide the school with resources and work on setting up more support programs.

Food, Friends, Fun
Food, Friends and Fun continues for two more weeks

on Wednesdays this summer from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.,
and other churches Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday].
Please keep your sign-ups coming!
This coming week on August 8, we still need:
- Leader in crafts (1)
- Group leaders (1 or 2 adults, 1 or 2 youth)
- Child care helper for the nursery (1)
- Preschool helpers (1 or 2 adults, 1 or 2 youth)

A big thank you to Meredith Bullis for organizing the Not-on-Sunday-Sunday School playgroup for children ages 3 - 7 and their parents. This has been a wonderful contribution to learning and fellowship this summer, allowing us to welcome a family new to CPC through it. What else is possible?

CPC Social Justice Task Force Event:
Cary Police Chief to speak at CPC, August 12
After Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, was killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, a national conversation started about law enforcement and communities of color. That conversation was also happening in Cary - at Headliners Barbershop, where the clientele is majority African-American.
Tru Pettigrew was one of those clients. He had a two-year-old son at home and was concerned about what it would be like for him to be a black boy growing up in the United States. He was so worried, he went down to the Cary Police Department to talk to someone. At the same time, leaders within the Cary Police Department
were already talking about how they had not done enough to build relationships with the African-American community.
Join us
at 11:00 a.m in the CPC Fellowship Hall (following 10:00 a.m. worship) on August 12, when Cary Police Chief Tony Godwin and Tru Pettigrew will share this compelling story and talk about the work that followed. Their presentation will end with time for questions, answers, and discussion.
This event will last approximately one hour. Childcare will be provided. Snacks and beverages will be served. Hosted by the CPC Social Justice Task Force.

All CPC youth are invited to stop by Fresh Cary, a local ice cream shop (138 East Chatham Street) on most Wednesday evenings this summer. We'll gather at 7:00 p.m. each week for fellowship and tasty ice cream, then wrap up around 8:30 p.m. Feel free to come and go as your schedule allows.

Session Highlights, July 23, 2018
At its recent stated meeting, Session:
- Approved a request from the Nominating Team to call a congregational meeting on August 26, 2018 for the purpose of electing officers who will begin their service in January/February, 2019.
- Received a CPC financial review from Barbara Carew, Finance Manager. Year to Date giving has been faithful and we are anticipating at or above budget as of June 30. Watch for Year to Date giving statements next week.
- Discussed reflections on the last Town Hall meeting. The Transition Team is grateful for those that came and participated and are hopeful that many others will take the time to complete and submit the information requested. The information gleaned from these forms will be shared with the congregation and invaluable to the PNC once that group is elected.
- Continued their discussion on the current organizational structure of the ministry areas, how elders are involved in each, and how to better facilitate communication among the ministry areas and to the congregation.
- Approved a motion from the Personnel Team to grant Rev. Alan Bancroft one week of study leave/continuing education per year, based on his being ordained (though not serving in an ordained position.)
- Approved a motion from the Operations Team to decline offers from two CPC neighbors to purchase a portion of CPC's land. Additional discussion ensued regarding assessing future land use.
- Heard from the Communications Team that work on CPC's new website is almost complete and expected to launch mid-August.
- Previewed new time and talent sheets that will used to gather updated information from the congregation.

Movies with a Message
The CPC library has a new selection of PG-rated movies with positive messages for older children. Each DVD includes a label explaining why the movie is rated PG and discussion questions from commonsensemedia.org. The movies are all based upon books which are available in the CPC library as well as in the Wake County Public Libraries, but you can only borrow the DVDs from the CPC library.
- Flipped, based on the book by Wendelin Van Draanen, is a romance told in two voices. The first time Juli Baker saw Bryce Loski, she flipped. The first time Bryce saw Juli, he ran. Then in the eighth grade, just as Juli realizes Bryce isn't as wonderful as she thought, Bryce starts to see that Juli is pretty amazing. How these two teens manage to see beyond the surface and come together makes a comic and poignant romance.
- The Great Gilly Hopkins, based on the book by Katherine Paterson, is about foster child Gilly Hopkins who is looking for a home. She's been angry, lonely, and hurting for so long that's she's always ready for a fight. But what she doesn't realize is that every time she wins, she really loses, until she discovers a love as formidable as any enemy she's ever known.
- The Watsons Go to Birmingham, based on the book by Christopher Paul Curtis, is set in the hilarious world of ten-year-old Kenny and his family, the Weird Watsons of Flint, Michigan. There's Momma, Dad, little sister Joetta, and big brother Byron. Then the family go for a visit to Grandma, heading South to Birmingham, Alabama, and one of the darkest moments in America's history.
