Twin Cities Marathon is this Sunday!
October 6 starting at 8am
The Twin Cities Marathon takes place this Sunday morning. Plan extra time to get to Sabbath Beginnings and Sacred Journey worship, as parts of Hennepin Avenue in front of our church building will be closed during the race. Roads reopen by approximately 10am.

Youth Ministries Open House

All parents of youth are invited to join Rick in the Longfellow room after the Traditional Worship service this Sunday, October 6. Bring your cinnamon roll or enjoy light refreshments at the open house. In addition to connecting with Rick you can learn more about Confirmation Class, The Youth Lock-In, Trunk-or-Treat, and more. Come and stay a few minutes before you leave church on Sunday!

Making Sense Class
October 6, 11:15am in the Harrison Room
Led by John Guy
This diverse group meets weekly, with occasional breaks to re-group or between discussion topics, for lively discussion, study, and friendly debate about what it means to be a Christian in a world that is increasingly complex. John Guy serves as facilitator. The class uses the Bible, along with other topical books to explore how the message of Christ speaks to the challenges of today for the church and for the church in the world.
This Sunday, Sr. Pastor Judy Zabel will be presenting a “State of the Church” update in preparation for the General Conference coming in 2020. She will provide the latest perspective on key issues effecting National Denomination, Minnesota Conference and Hennepin Avenue UMC.

Christ in Crisis
, examines the state of our nation and the ways in which the solution to our current political and spiritual crises is rooted in a return to Jesus's foundational teachings.

Koinonia Conversation Update
In September, the Trustees contracted with Transitions in Business, a
mergers & acquisitions firm,
to represent Hennepin Avenue UMC in marketing the Koinonia property. Sam Thompson, the owner, previously owned and operated a conference and event planning company and is very familiar with retreat centers. Their knowledge of the current market and available financing impressed all of the Trustees. They have produced a confidential information package about the property, and are actively shopping it around to potential buyers and parties who have already expressed an interest. We will keep you informed as the process progresses.

Call for Advent Devotionals
This Advent, we will be exploring "Holy Surprises!"--all the ways that God's activity eclipses cultural norms, upends our expectations, and surprises us.
How have you been surprised by the initiative of God or God's people in the world? What encouragement do you find in God's favor of the lowly over the mighty, of the call to turn swords into plowshares, or in a child coming to lead the people? Where do you find hope that new movements can be born?
You are invited to submit a short reflection, essay, or poem, 250 words or less, on the theme of "Holy Surprises!" for Hennepin's Advent devotional booklet.

World Thank Offering Sunday
October 13
The World Thank Offering, giving freely and abundantly in response to God’s goodness has been the way of life for United Methodist Women for almost 150 years.
United Methodist Women and their fore mothers have used the World Thank Offering since 1881 to give thanks to God for our blessings and to share our love with others. As one of the five channels of giving, the World Thank Offering supports United Methodist Women-related national mission institutions and projects as well as international ministries.

Adulting 101 is a fun, casual way for young adults to engage in topics they care about. Each session features a topic expert, an opportunity to discuss the day's topic, and a chance to connect with other people with shared interests.

Everyone is welcome to join us for Fall Fun at Koinonia. There will be games, crafts, movie night, an ice cream social, scavenger hunt, photo contest, and the leaves will be gorgeous! Cost is $100 for adults, $60 for kids under 16, and free for kids under 5.

Parenting for LYFE
October 20, 11:15am in the Social Hall
Parenting for LYFE is an open, drop-in group that meets monthly to discuss all things parenting. We welcome the wisdom of parents with children of all ages.
After enjoying brunch as a family, parents are invited to stay in the social hall to participate in our monthly discussion topic, while kids will enjoy music class in Room 105, led by retired music teacher Patricia Rice.
This month, we will look at parenting with a growth mindset. We will explore the differences between growth vs. fixed mindset, and how a growth mindset can help frame both learning and parenting.

Garrett–Evangelical Theological Seminary is heading on the road with Dr. Rolf Nolasco to bring his workshop,
"God's Beloved Queer: Awakening & Flourishing the Queer Soul,"
to Minneapolis! Nolasco is a professor of pastoral theology as well as a trained psychotherapist and the author of numerous books, including his latest,
God’s Beloved Queer.
All are welcome to attend this workshop, in particular LGBTQIA+ persons and those who work in and with the LGBTQIA+ community.

Trunk-or-Treat is right around the corner! On October 27 from 4:00 to 5:30pm Hennepin Avenue UMC will host hundreds of kids from the church and neighborhood for this family-friendly event.
Help us make this celebration a success by bringing extra candy to the East entry starting September 29.

What is legacy giving? Why should you consider making a legacy gift, and when is a good time to begin planning such a gift? How do the new tax regulations affect my planning? Join the discussion on legacy giving to learn about how legacy gifts help ensure for future generations what you treasure about Hennepin. These gifts also provide significant financial planning benefits for donors and their families. This forum will highlight the concepts and strategies of making legacy gifts. The information is useful for adults of all ages!

Hennepin men will gather at Koinonia November 9-10 to ponder answers to that question, especially where our own lives are concerned. - Think of a guy you don't know well, maybe in a different generation, to ride with. That will increase connections and reduce emissions!

Soul Cafe:
Milestones
October 27, 7pm in the Art Gallery
In the long history of jazz, perhaps no one has been a more prolific innovator than trumpeter Miles Davis. Miles re-invented himself almost every decade, starting in his teens. In the process he kept expanding the vocabulary of jazz, adding new sounds, new colors and new options for musicians to explore.
We will sample Miles’ music across these decades including some of his biggest hits. To accompany these milestones in the life of a great jazz artist, we have found poetry that marks turning points of our lives and our times. To do justice to the wide range of Miles Davis music, we are excited to add two guests musicians to this performance: Omar Abdulkarim and JT Bates.

Sanctuary Choir Welcoming New Singers
The Sanctuary Choir is welcoming new members for their 2019-2020 ministry season. All voice parts welcome, solid choral experience necessary, a sense of fun and worship required. This singing, worshiping, praying, celebrating, challenging ensemble brings music ministry to the Sanctuary throughout the year, and strives to support the singing ministry of the congregation each and every week.

We're excited to announce the start of the Hennepin Avenue UMC Youth Bell Choir for all interested ringers, grades 4 through 12. Krista Riedel is directing this energetic and fun music-making group, with rehearsals on Sundays 11:30am-12:30pm starting on September 15. The group will be serving in worship services as well as special events.

Fall Art Display
September 8 - October 27 in the Art Gallery
The Fine Arts Team is proud to present their fall sculpture show,
Family
, featuring the artistry of Zimbabwe Shona artists, from the Curator Rex Mhiripiri of Mhiripiri Galleries. Mhiripiri has one of the largest collections of Zimbabwe sculpture in the world outside Zimbabwe.
Shona sculpture is most often carved from serpentine or verdite stone, and derives its name from the majority tribe in Zimbabwe, the Mashona. The heritage and ancient tradition of working stone in this part of Africa has existed for centuries. Zimbabwe literally translates to "large house of stone.”
Serpentine comes in many different forms, colors and degrees of hardness: black, green, yellow, brown, gray and mixtures of different colors within the same stone. The intensely hard stone of Springstone, is often chosen among the more prominent artists because of its prestige and difficulty to carve. Verdite is highly prized and rare semiprecious stone which is predominantly green, but is also found in bronze and brown. Granite, rapoko and soapstone are also used by Shona sculptors.
Zimbabwe stone artists have achieved world recognition, and have had their work exhibited in major galleries and museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Rodin museum in France.
