Letter from the President
August is here and that means we're approaching the end of our landmark 85th season. We finish it off this weekend with a delightful Young Rep production of
Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr, put on by our extremely talented 7-13 year-olds. Our Young Rep kids are the future of theatre and I can't recommend watching and supporting them enough. Opening night was a near sellout and tickets are going fast, so don't wait too long if you're thinking about attending.
It's not just our 85th season that's coming to an end though. I have the dissatisfaction now of announcing that this will also be the last production for our artistic director Dave DeChristopher, who has accepted a director position at the Black Hills Community Theatre in Rapid City, South Dakota. It has been an honor to work with Dave over the past two and a half years and I can't thank him enough for the positive impact he has made here at The Rep. I wish him all the best in this next chapter of his life and encourage you to do the same.
That being said, I also can assure you that the future is still bright here in Toledo. We have a fantastic line up of shows for our 86th season, including our opener in September,
Fun Home
, winner of the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical. Tickets are on sale now and Season Subscriptions are still available as well. We've also opened registration for our Young Rep Ed classes for 2018-2019 and our Adult Rep Ed classes should be announced in just a few weeks. Please
to check out all the fun and innovative classes and workshops we have lined up for our 7-17 year-olds this upcoming year.
If you liked what you saw this past season, I encourage you to get more involved. We are always welcoming new volunteers. And if you're thinking about making a financial contribution, would you consider being a
season or show sponsor in 2018-2019?
Finally, we have a very exciting challenge before us for our holiday classic
A Christmas Carol. We have an opportunity to make some major improvements to the show's aging set, thanks in large part to a generous matching grant challenge of $12,500 from the Andersons Fund Supporting Organization of the Toledo Community Foundation. I hope you'll take the time to read more about it in the section below and consider making a donation.
Whatever your involvement at The Rep over the past year, on behalf of the entire board and staff, thank you for being a part of our community and we look forward to seeing you at the theatre!
|
We are sad to announce that our Artistic Director, Dave DeChristopher, is stepping down from his position as Artistic Director of the Toledo Repertoire Theatre. Dave is moving on to the majestic landscapes, rolling prairies, beautiful wild life, and scenic byways of South Dakota in a Director position at a state of the art community theatre in Rapid City.
During his tenure at The Rep, Dave has been instrumental in creating new and exciting programming initiatives such as "Toledo Voices" and our "Rainbow Readings" and has made fundraising and community awareness a key component of his mission.
We are sad to see Dave leave his home at The Rep, but wish him all the best on his exciting new adventure and wish him, quite literally, happy trails!

An Opportunity, and a Challenge...can you help?
For more than 30 years, The Rep has enriched the holiday season
with its lavish and heartwarming annual staging of A Christmas Carol. First
presented at the theatre's 10th Street stage in 1983, then the Peristyle and
the Stranahan Theatre, this historic production has now found the perfect
home in the historic Valentine Theatre, where it has been
performed for many years. For many Toledo children, the school
performances of A Christmas Carol are their first exposure to the magic of
live theatre.
While the years have deepened and improved the show, they have
not been kind to the complicated Christmas Carol stage sets which, every
year, are taken down and taken apart and sent into storage for eleven
months. The process of loading, unloading, setting-up and taking down has
taken a natural toll, as has normal wear and tear. Factor in the occasional
unforeseen bump and bang, and the need for repairs and upgrades
becomes clear. For reasons of safety as well as aesthetics, the entire A
Christmas Carol set needs careful and thoughtful rehabilitation, and that
expense is not within our regular budget.
But with your help, there's a solution; a Christmas miracle, if
you will.
The Rep has received a challenge grant, from The Andersons Fund Supporting Organization of the Toledo Community Foundation. If we
can raise $12,500, they will match it, and Charles Dickens' London will be
reborn, more beautiful (and safer) than ever! Please consider a donation,
large or small, to keep this holiday tradition alive for years to come.
Thank you.

Based on the 1970s Emmy Award-winning Saturday morning cartoon, this fast-paced musical follows Tom, a nerve-wracked schoolteacher who is anxious about his first day of teaching. He tries to relax by watching TV when various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win over his students with imagination and music. A pop-culture phenomenon, this story teaches history, grammar, math and much more through clever, tuneful songs including "Just a Bill" and "Conjunction Junction".

TOLEDO BLADE
"Young Rep to 'Rock' the stage"
"The Toledo Repertoire Theatre presents the musical Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr., a Young Rep production, in four shows beginning
Thursday
. Performances feature a cast of 42, ages 7-13, including 11 soloists, an extremely talented cast, director Jill Reinstein said. The musical is based on Schoolhouse Rock, the acclaimed series that made its mark in pop culture by showing how much fun lessons in math, grammar, history, and other subjects can be, taught with catchy tunes and fun lyrics. The entertaining and educational animated videos were broadcast between
Saturday
morning cartoons from 1973 to 1985."

"Young Rep performing Heathers The Musical"
TOLEDO BLADE
"Heathers at the Toledo Rep"
"The darkly comic rock musical, with book, music, and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O'Keefe, is based on the film written by Daniel Waters. It follows three teenage girls named Heather who rule the school's social scene as members of a popular but feared clique, and Veronica Sawyer, who is invited to join the cruel threesome but soon realizes that she will have to turn on the kids who are now her friends. She and her new boyfriend, Jason Dean, join forces in a plan for revenge that sometimes ends in murder."
"
Heathers deals with high school kids and the issues they confront, such as peer pressure, drugs, and alcohol, "the stuff that we as parents are telling the kids, 'No, all that stuff is bad.' " director Victoria Monhollen said. "It's all about popularity and how one girl, Veronica, wants to join [the clique] so bad. We hit the issues head on, but we try to do it tactfully and tastefully so people will have a good time here."

The Toledo Rep had some very special guests on July 13th!

Our second Adult Rep Ed session of "AUDITIONS!" taught by the talented Fran Martone was another sold out success! Students were taught how nerve-wracking auditions can be creative treasures and were given the tools and confidence to make them so. In this class the students worked on monologues, sides, and cold reads, learning tips and techniques that would allow them to shine. They discovered the importance of making strong choices and the necessity of learning to decipher "director speak."

Paranormal Investigation at The Rep
On July 8th, Haunted Toledo conducted an almost nine hour paranormal investigation at The Rep! The spirits were extremely talkative that night. In the very wee hours of the morning,
Sarah Chelten from Haunted Toledo
decided to use the trapped door to take an adventure through the crawl space between our lobby ceiling and stage floor. When our President, Chris McAnall, saw all the fun she was having, he decided to join in on the late night shenanigans!
