Detroit Outdoors News
Hello!

We welcome you to our Detroit Outdoors newsletter! It's been an amazing inaugural season so far! We are excited to share occasional updates about Detroit Youth connecting with nature. We hope you enjoy it!

ABOUT DETROIT OUTDOORS
Scout Hollow is located in Rouge Park and is Detroit’s only campground. Our program provides training, camping gear and programming for youth development organizations, scout units and schools to have an overnight camping experience right in their own city.
Once leaders and teachers participate in the Camping Leadership Immersion Course (CLIC) they gain access to training materials and a gear library that contains all the equipment needed to outfit their group for a safe and fun camping trip at Scout Hollow.
This could be a great way to engage the youth you serve with the local natural environment, team-building activities, and experiences that will inspire them to spend more time outdoors!
Detroit Outdoors Staff
Detroit Outdoors is a collaborative project between the City of Detroit Parks and Recreation Department, Sierra Club Inspiring Connections Outdoors, and YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit.

The team dedicated full-time to the project is composed by Garrett Dempsey (Sierra Club), Jac Kyle (City of Detroit Parks & Rec.), Rachel Felder and Ana Quevedo (Student Conservation Association).
SUCCESSFUL CAMPING LEADERSHIP TRAININGS!
We've had two great CLIC trainings so far! 22 amazing trainees from all over Detroit that engage with youth in different ways can now help them connect to the outdoors by camping at Scout Hollow. Thank you to everyone that formed part of these amazing experiences!

UPCOMING TRAININGS
There are two more CLIC trainings coming up this year! Aug. 10-11 and September 22-23. Trainings start at 12 pm and end at 1 pm of the following day. If you are interested in attending send us your registration form (link below) to DetroitScoutHollow@gmail.com.

SITE IMPROVEMENTS
With the help of amazing volunteers Scout Hollow has been improved! Over 100 staff from The Kresge Foundation have volunteered this Spring and Summer with multiple projects in the campground. We have cleared vegetation and installed poles to hang dining flies. Thanks to an aspiring Eagle Scout from troop #194 we now have picnic tables at Scout Hollow! Construction has begun on a perimeter nature trail. We are constantly removing invasive species and working on the new Scout Hollow trail, if you're interested in volunteering let us know!

DAY TRIPS
We are so happy that so many youth groups have chosen Scout Hollow for a day trip! This Spring 7 middle school classes went to our beautiful campground to have a fun-filled day in nature! These young explorers went on hikes, learned to set up tents, made s'mores, helped us remove invasive species, and more!
THANK YOU!
This project is a collaboration of different groups with a common goal: facilitate and promote outdoor experiences for youth in Detroit. Thank you to the Sierra Club, City of Detroit, YMCA of Metro Detroit, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, and Friends of Rouge Park for all your support!
