zardersStudent Spotlight: High School Senior Lukas Zarders

This month's student profile features Shaker Heights High School senior Lukas Zarders, a MAC Scholar, SGORR member, varsity soccer player and collegiate track and field hopeful. He's an unassuming teen with a quiet determination and a fondness for traveling---he holds dual citizenship with Sweden, where he's spent his summers as long as he can remember. Also, later this month, look for Lukas in the 2019 issue of Measuring What Matters, the District's Annual Profile.

robertstribbleEmployee Spotlight: High School Spanish Teacher Ellen Roberts

Twenty-four years ago, Shaker Heights High School Spanish teacher Ellen Roberts was walking along a Lake Erie beach with her then three-year-old daughter and they stumbled upon a monarch caterpillar. Her daughter was smitten, named the caterpillar "Cutie" and wanted to take it home. Ms. Roberts obliged her, not knowing that this one serendipitous discovery of a caterpillar would forever change the way Ms. Roberts would experience Cleveland summers. Ever since, Ms. Roberts dedicates the weeks between early July and late September to raising all the monarch caterpillars she finds---in her yard, on walks through the neighborhood or local Northeast Ohio parks---and releasing them, as they make their return migration from southern Canada to their overwintering site in Mexico. She also tags monarchs as part of a special butterfly project with the University of Kansas.

staffspot2Employee Spotlight: Technical Services Coordinator Casey Ailiff

As the Technical Services Coordinator, Casey Ailiff has one of the District's ultimate behind-the-scenes jobs: he is responsible for keeping the District's technology infrastructure-servers, wireless, phones and switches-humming along smoothly. His job is equal parts problem-solving, troubleshooting, repairing and customer service. It's a job that requires a cool head and a willingness to consider problems from many angles. It's no surprise, then, that Mr. Ailiff loves to head to the golf course when he's not too busy at work or enjoying time with his two children.

solarHigh School Engineering Teachers Use Solar Panel Data to Speed Calculations

Last year, the High School environmental club used $5,000 it had raised and saved, along with an additional $5,000 in matching funds from the Shaker Schools Foundation to purchase and install 10 solar panels on the High School roof. The idea was to generate solar energy to help reduce the High School's carbon footprint.

Then this fall, Engineering Applications teachers Joe Marencik and Ben Turner, along with Environmental Science teacher Jeanne Wiemer, realized the solar panels are also generating data that the Engineering Applications students can use in calculations for class. More specifically, it's helping students calculate how much solar power is available to cook food in a solar oven.

In the past, the students had been using generic website data in their calculations. But this year, Dr. Marencik and Mr. Turner measured the square footage of the solar panels and noted the wattage generated by them.  "We needed the watts per meter squared, which is called 'solar irradiance,' for our efficiency calculations of our solar ovens," Dr. Marencik says. "The students were like, 'wait...we can get this data right now?'" Read more about how these teachers and students are using data from the solar panels.

reportcardShaker Heights City School District Shows Steady Gains on State Report Card

The Shaker Heights City School District continued to show steady improvement in student achievement as measured by the annual  State Report Cards, released today by the Ohio Department of Education.

State data show that Shaker students have improved in 18 of 21 state-required academic measurements over the past three years. For the second consecutive year, the District earned an "A" in the report card component that examines the percentage of students who graduate from high school in four or five years.

While the report card is only one measure of academic performance, data from the state show that the District continues to make gains in closing the achievement gap between how groups of Shaker students perform compared to state benchmarks.

"Much of the state data align with the progress we are seeing in our own District metrics," said Dr. Marla Robinson, Chief Academic Officer. "Our metrics identify our areas of strength, and they show us where we have opportunities to improve."

"While no single measurement can demonstrate the great work that is going on in our schools, we embrace accountability and have specific plans in place to address the areas in which we need to improve," Dr. Robinson added.

caraCara Sutherland (SHHS '12) Named New Coach of SHHS Raiderettes

Shaker Heights Schools is pleased to announce that Cara Sutherland, a 2012 graduate of Shaker Heights High School, has returned to her alma mater to serve as the coach of the Raiderettes.

Ms. Sutherland, a professional dancer who has performed with professional dance teams, was a Raiderette during her time at Shaker Heights High School. While she is still active in dance as an instructor and performer, she currently works as a full-time marketing professional. Ms. Sutherland is the third Shaker Heights High School alum to join the District this year, in addition to SGORR advisor Tiara Sargeant (Class of 2014) and Jarryd Tribble (Class of 2003).

"Coming back to Shaker feels very familiar, but there are a lot of great things happening today that are different," she says. "The Raiderettes are a much more diverse group than we've been in the past, which is exciting. Also, the Raiderettes and cheerleaders used to feel very separate-now that we have some cheerleaders on the Raiderette squad, it feels like both activities are more integrated. This is a very dedicated group of students."

About Oz (from Playscripts):  Reeling from her sister's death, Beth suddenly finds herself journeying through a world suspiciously resembling the film The Wizard of Oz.  But with the yellow brick road sold to foreign investors after a financial meltdown, the Scarecrow reveling in his ignorant bliss, the Cowardly Lion acting like a paranoid sociopath, and the Tin Man embracing his emotional numbness, Beth wonders what role she plays in this classic story gone awry. Oz is a hilarious and heart-wrenching exploration of grief and perseverance on the road to acceptance.

"Everyone's lives have been touched by cancer in some way," says Coach Rick Nerone. "I think that part of my job as a coach is to expose our athletes to things beyond sports. And any attention that they can help bring to cancer awareness, whether the jerseys remind someone to schedule a mammogram or to get something checked out, then we've done our job and it's been worth it."
