Greetings and Happy December!

On behalf of the board, we would like to thank all of you who made it to our 2016 Annual Conference in Greenville.  We had 234+ registrants, 3 packed days of sessions and events, 3 incredible General Sessions and speakers, 1 fantastic awards ceremony, 1 creative artist bazaar, great food, a wonderful location, and a successful event!

Plans are underway for the 2017 conference.  For those who could not make it to this year's, mark your calendars for November 2017 in beautiful Beaufort!  Be on the lookout in January with the specific date of our conference and other important information!

2017 looks to be quite busy for the SCAEA. The first two items kicking off our year will be the SC Arts Advocacy Day on February 7th and the NAEA Convention in New York City (March 2-4).  I hope many of you will be able to join us!

YAM exhibits and events will be going on in each of the regions. Be on the lookout for information from your Region Coordinator about this.  As well, don't forget about the YAM Flag competition sponsored by Sargent Art! (great prizes for you and your student!)

Lower Region News from Elise Stuck
Fearless Faux Encaustics:
An Art Retreat hosted by SCAEA Lower Region
Join us for a faux encaustic workshop presented by Professor Tracey Hunter-Doniger at the Gibbes Museum.  Come relax and rejuvenate through the artistic process as we explore a unique painting medium.  The faux aspect of this process will enable you to safely apply your newfound skills and knowledge of encaustics in the K-12 grade classroom. 
Also included in the workshop is a guided tour of the Gibbes Museum.  Learn about the many art educational resources available to you and your students.  Following the workshop, you may wish to explore the wealth of art opportunities found in downtown Charleston.  Check out this  link to see just a few of the galleries.

Lower Region Youth Art Month Show
Join the South Carolina Art Education Association in celebrating the creative students and art programs of our state during Youth Art Month! The Lower Region celebration will be hosted at FABULON: Center for Art and Education on Saturday, March 18th, 2017, from 2:00-4:00pm.  The showcase will include refreshments, art activities for all ages, and award announcements at 3:45pm.

Eastern Region News with Jen Pierce
The Eastern region YAM show will run from  March 10-15th at Conway Glass in Conway. 
Each teacher can submit 4 entries.  Art is due March 1st to either Jen Pierce @ Myrtle Beach High School, Conway Glass (708 12th Ave. Conway, SC 29526), or Leesa Meador at Waccamaw Elementary. There will be 2 separate receptions this year.  March 10th will be the middle/high school reception from 6-8pm   Awards @ 7pm.  March 11th will be the Elementary reception from 6-8pm  Awards @ 7pm.

Higher Ed Information from Tracey Hunter-Doniger
The Higher Education Division of SCAEA is working on a Read to Succeed course specifically designed for Visual Arts Educators.  This course will be designed to meet the requirements of the Read to Succeed legislature while making the information relevant to visual arts teachers.  The course will be 100% on line and ran through the state. As of right now the tentative date for the course release will be March. More information will be provided as we know the details.
 
Additionally, we are investigating the new ADEPT and how it relates to visual arts.

The NAHS state convention is booked for  Saturday, March 11, 2017  9am-3pm at the Columbia Museum of Art.

Middle Level Division Update from Joshua Powell

News from Carrie Ann Powers at the Department of Education
Standards:
As a result of the dedicated efforts of a team of South Carolina educators from the school and district levels, as well as representatives from institutions of higher education, the South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Standards are now available for public review and feedback through an online field review survey. The development process established provides an opportunity to ensure South Carolina's high quality standards are based on current research and best practices and meet the varied educational needs of our state's students.

Links to the online surveys are included below. More detailed information regarding the organization of the standards, as well as the process for submitting feedback, is included in the individual survey forms. Everyone is invited to review the draft standards and provide feedback using the online forms below by January 15, 2017 .

Feedback on the South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Standards will be reviewed by the Writing Committee, and necessary revisions will be made to the draft standards. Public comment must be submitted via the online survey forms. The field review period will end on January 15, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

Grants:
The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) announces that the 2017-18 Request for Proposals for the Arts Curricular Innovation Grants (ACIG)- Distinguished Arts Program grant is now available online. The deadline to apply is April 10, 2017 .

For this funding round, the SCDE will fund schools and districts that propose arts initiatives that will support quality arts education programs that significantly improve student achievement in the arts based on the implementation of the 2010 South Carolina Academic Standards for the Visual and Performing Arts.

The SCDE will offer a technical assistance webinar for interested grant applicants on January 27, 2017, from 3:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m. , via Blackboard Collaborate. Please use this link to participate. Participants may log in up to 30 minutes in advance of the session to test their equipment and download handouts.

Opportunities, Contests, Scholarships, and More
The Converse College Young Women in Art Juried Exhibition deadline for entries is  March 10, 2017 . The exhibition runs  March 14 - 25  when the closing reception will occur  1:30 - 3:00 . Entry information can be found at  www.Converse.edu/YWIA

S.C. Department of Education 2017 School Bus Safety Poster Contest
 
The South Carolina Department of Education Office of Transportation is seeking entries for the 2017 National School Bus Safety Poster Contest.
 
This year's theme is "My Driver - My Safety Hero!" which emphasizes the important role the bus driver plays in keeping students safe on and around the bus. The competition is divided into five divisions based on grade level and is open to students in grades K-12. Entries must be received by the Office of Transportation by 4:30 p.m. on July 3, 2017, with winners announced in early August 2017.
 
First place winning posters in each division will be entered for judging in the National School Bus Safety Poster Contest, with judging held at the NAPT Conference and Trade Show in the fall of 2017.
 
The South Carolina Overall Contest Winner and first, second, and third place winners in each division will receive a plaque and a framed copy of their posters. Additionally, the Overall Contest Winner's poster will be used to promote School Bus Driver Appreciation Week in February 2018.
 
The National Overall Contest Winner's poster will be used to promote School Bus Safety Week in October 2018.

ConneCTEd and Ready: Creating Career Connections 
The Office of Career and Technology Education is requesting student designs for the 2017 Education and Business Summit (EBS). The theme for this year's EBS is ConneCTEd and Ready: Creating Career Connections. The winning design will be featured on printed and electronic conference materials for 2017. The student or student team with the winning design will be recognized at the opening ceremony of the 2017 EBS on June 25, 2017.

The student designs must be submitted via e-mail to rrutledge@ed.sc.gov no later than Wednesday, January 11, 2017, by the career center director or high school principal. An entry form must accompany each design. Student teams may submit a design; however, it must meet all guidelines outlined in the official rules.

Designs will receive confirmation of submission via e-mail within two business days. Submissions will be assessed with a rubric and the winning design will be notified no later than March 1, 2017. National Young Arts Foundation:
How do students apply for US Presidential Scholar in the Arts?
Young Arts, the core program of The National Young Arts Foundation nominates up to 60 candidates for consideration as US Presidential Scholars in the Arts following participation in Young Arts week. Young Arts can be contacted directly for specific questions at 1 800 970 ARTS or via email at  INFO@youngarts.org.
The registration deadline for this program is in October every year.  As an Arts Educator, please go online to view the student application process and get familiar with the program prior to next fall.  You may have some students you want to encourage to participate.

Archibald Rutledge Scholarship Program:
The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) is announcing the Archibald Rutledge Scholarship Program. This annual program offers public school twelfth-grade students the opportunity to compete for a scholarship worth approximately $2,000 in creative writing, dance, music, theatre, and visual arts. The purpose of the competition is to encourage and recognize academic and artistic excellence.

Applicants may participate in one of the following discipline areas: creative writing, dance, music, theatre, or visual arts. To compete, students should submit one original composition and a process folio for the visual arts area and an original and two copies of the original composition and process folio for the creative writing, dance, music, or theatre categories. Entriesmust be received by 5:00 p.m. or postmarked on or before Monday, February 6, 2017.

Panels of adjudicators in each area will review submissions and select a recipient and two alternates in each arts area. Adjudicators will base their selections on individual arts discipline criteria and the correlation of the process folio to the finished work. Inspiring Art
German street artist 1010 has been creating "cavernous" murals.  These optical illusions are created by painting different values of warm or cool colors in concentric "rings" over a dark background.  Read more about the artist and his work here
