Updates from IHSA Executive Director Lauri Morrison-Frichtl

I hope this finds you doing well and enjoying summer. I want to start with
an article that I found interesting by
Lolly Daskall. Daskall shares (and I agree) "our lives are often too hectic these days, making it easy to lose touch with who you are and who you want to be." Talking to yourself is a way to guide and motivate yourself. Daskall describes the "15 Things You Should Tell Yourself Everyday."
Let's look at the 15 Things -
- I would rather be kind than right
- I'm never too busy
- I will say what I mean and mean what I say
- I am tough and yet I am patient
- I am a student
- I will stop being a fixer
- I will stop judging and criticizing
- I will be consistent in my choices and daily actions
- I will accept that my mistakes are a big part of being successful
- I will stop making promises I cannot keep
- I know my experience is my best teacher
- I will allow my character to speak for itself
- I cannot control everything, but I can always control my response
- I will stop comparing myself with others
- I will work on the relationships that matter to me
I challenge you to do at least two or three of these things every day. Follow the link to the full article -
Here are the top four things you should know this month:
First, the new director of the Office of Head Start, Dr. Bergeron recently shared how her experience as a public school administrator gives her a passion for school readiness. She also describes her expectations for Head Start programs to work with public schools who will receive Head Start children. It's worth watching as it might give us insight into what might be in our future. Here is the link to the video. Let me know what you think?
Second, did you know that the White House declared that the war on poverty is over and we won? Yes, here is the report from the White House Council of Economic Advisers about the War on Poverty. On page 29, the report contends that "the War on Poverty is largely over and a success." At this time this report does not have legs but we will keep our eyes on it.
Third, NHSA released the report,
A Head Start on Treating Our Nation's Opioid Epidemic.
As policymakers and decision makers work to address the complexities of the challenges caused by opioid and substance misuse, children and early childhood providers are often left by the wayside. The report - a product of a national opioid working group of Head Start practitioners-focuses on how Head Start programs are addressing opioid and substance misuse in their communities, and sheds light on how core elements of Head Start such as parent engagement, community-driven design, and whole child/family approach make programs nationwide uniquely positioned to help children and families impacted by this crisis. The white paper specifically profiles two Head Start programs that have adapted very differently to meet their community needs, and puts forth the working group's agreed-upon recommendations. The reality is that, as opioid and substance misuse skyrockets, local Head Start programs are in increasing need of additional resources for training and programming support to: identify signs of home substance misuse; respond to children exhibiting increased developmental and behavioral challenges; and increase skills to intervene with families and children grappling with the many dimensions and tragedies of opioid addiction. Ultimately, the report builds the case that Head Start, as a comprehensive, multigenerational program with a direct line to children and families, has a critical role to play in confronting the drug epidemic.
Fourth, Family First Prevention Services Act reforms the federal child welfare financing streams to provide services to families who are at risk of entering the child welfare system. The bill aims to prevent children from entering foster care by allowing federal reimbursement for mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and in home parenting skill training. For more information on this Act please follow this link.
Enjoy the remainder of your summer! I know August is a busy month with all of the back to school activities. Here's to full enrollment on day one!
Thank you for all you do!
Take care,
Lauri
