November 2017

November is often a time to reflect and remember the things for which you are thankful. We are thankful for the many educators and administrators who everyday put their best foot forward to positively impact students. Most of all, CSTP is thankful for our readers, and those who engage in our work to strengthen the teaching profession. Thank you for staying connected and helping us make an impact in our state and beyond.

Do you have new teachers in your district or colleagues who should have this information? Be sure to   and encourage them to sign-up for our emails  to stay on top of events and opportunities.
CSTP in Action

School / District Teams Grow Knowledge of PLCs
On November 17 - 18, CSTP hosted school and district teams of educators focused on developing high-functioning PLCs. Led by NBCT Jami Gore, a math teacher at River Ridge High School in North Thurston Public Schools, and Karen Remy-Anderson, Executive Director of Student Support and Special Education, participants learned about the hierarchy of teacher needs and using data to inform, not drive, teacher dialogue and sharing about instructional practice.

CSTP will offer at least one PLC session during Camp CSTP this coming summer that will occur sometime the week of July 23 (details and registration will be released after the new year). If you are interested in be one of the first to know, sign up here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HZZK98R.

TPEP Best Practices Colloquium, Yakima, WA
On November 1st, CSTP hosted the Fourth Annual Fall TPEP Best Practices Colloquium in Yakima.  It was an energizing day of learning with a focus on student growth. The day was launched by Sue Anderson, Director of Educator Effectiveness at OSPI, and Whitney Meissner, Superintendent of La Conner School District, who both challenged us to be relentless in supporting each student to grow.

A wide variety of schools and districts were represented, prompting rich conversations and learning opportunities focusing on student growth. Six schools/ districts opened their practice for a deeper learning experience through 5 minute Ignite Presentations followed by workshop sessions. Presenters and topics included:
  • Marie Curie Elementary School, Pasco: Keeping Student Growth A Focus For ALL Kids
  • Seattle Public Schools: Leveraging Teacher Leadership to Sustain Knowledge and Learning About Student Growth
  • Walla Walla High School: PLCs and Student Growth
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, Yakima School District: Beyond Admiring the Data
  • Lake Stevens School District, Mead School District, Spokane Public Schools: Grading for Growth: Transform points into practice
  • North Kitsap High School, North Kitsap Public Schools: Real and Relevant Student Growth

Another highlight of the day was the Job Alike Session in which participants were able to engage in problem solving conversations and share experiences in job specific groups. The day was capped off with sessions with Framework Authors Patty Maxfield with CEL, Kate Dickson from Danielson and Tina Boogren from Marzano, allowing even further conversation related to each specific instructional framework.

A big thank you to all who presented and attended! We hope to see you at our next TPEP Best Practices Colloquium March 1, 2018 in Tacoma (registration will open in December).
