Weekend Lineup
Czechs in Victoria, Wends in Serbin!

Victoria Shares Czech Heritage
From accordion music, to Tarok playing, polka, food, and history, you can find it all at the 33rd Annual Victoria Czech Heritage Festival on Sun., Sept. 22, at the Victoria Community Center, sponsored by the Victoria County Czech Heritage Society.  The festival begins promptly at 9:30 am with five musical events held throughout the day. Victoria's own Pat Veit will welcome everyone to the festival with his accordion. Fritz Hodde & Fab 6 will play from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm, followed by the Ennis Czech Boys from 1:30-4 pm. ECB will then battle Mark Halata & Texavia before Texavia headlines from 4:30-7:30 pm. Additional entertainment can be found in the Community Center Annex with Los Kolaches from Shiner, sponsored by Texas Polka News, performing from 2-6 pm.
The festival organizers not only want you to enjoy all that's Czech but learn the traditions as well. New this year will be a one-hour demonstration - Old School Kolaches - by Dawn Orsak. Texas Polka News is proud to sponsor this special attraction.  Admission is only $8 per person for all four bands and activities, with youth under 15 years old  always free.

Wendish Fest 31
The Texas Wendish Heritage Museum and historic St. Paul Lutheran church - one of the painted churches of Texas - will present the 31st Annual Wendish Fest on Sun., Sept. 22.  Enjoy a fun, family-oriented day in Serbin (six miles southwest of Giddings) featuring traditional Wendish foods like sausage, sauerkraut, and those famous homemade Wendish noodles.  Throughout the day there will be folkways and folklife demonstrations and exhibits, competitions like the Coffee Cake Bake-Off and washer pitching, children's activities, Wendish Easter egg decorating and display, vintage machinery, plus POLKA music!  Featured entertainers this year will be The Moravians from Ennis. They'll get the music going about 1:30 pm. But you will want to be around at 12:45 when you can bid on winning coffee cake bake off entries!! Auction proceeds benefit the Texas Wendish Heritage Scholarship Fund.  An English worship service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church at 8:30 am, and a German worship service will be held at 10:30 am with Rev. Mark Barz as guest speaker. Rev. Barz currently serves as 3rd Vice President of the Texas District, Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.
Wendish Fest 31 will be a special day of celebration dedicated to sharing the history and heritage of the Wends who came to Texas beginning in 1849, eager to build their homes and preserve their faith and traditions.

WEEKLY LAUGH
Upon hearing that her elderly grandfather had just  passed away, Katie went straight to her  grandparent's house to visit her 95-year-old  grandmother and comfort her. When she asked  how her grandfather had died, her grandmother  replied, "He had a heart attack while we were  making love on Sunday morning."

Horrified, Katie  told her grandmother that 2 people nearly 100  years old having sex would surely be asking for  trouble.

"Oh no, my dear," replied Granny. "Many  years ago, realizing our advanced age, we figured  out the best time to do it was when the church  bells would start to ring. It was just the right  rhythm. Nice and slow and even. Nothing too  strenuous ."  She paused to wipe away a tear, and  continued, "He'd still be alive if the ice cream truck  hadn't come along."
